My hypersensitivity towards my husband is killing us. The evil one has ramped up his assault where it is a constant struggle that he’s using my weakness of being extremely sensitive to whatever my husband says or does to its highest degree.

It feels beyond my strength to see clearly and the evil one envelops my emotion in an endless cycle of being too needy for my husband to feeling the slightest disappointment in my husband’s behavior to rejecting my husband completely.

Ashamed at my behavior towards my husband, yet powerless to fight it. Praying to Our Blessed Mother, St. Michael, and my guardian angel.

Anyone else deal with hypersensitivity and unrealistic expectations in themselves? I hate myself for being this way.

Please pray for me to change, and most of all for my husband to continue following God despite my ugliness towards him.

Peace.

I have struggled with this and continue to struggle from time to time. I went to counseling and was helped enormously. When I notice it creeping up on me, I can get off the crazy train a LOT sooner using some of the techniques I learned in therapy. I also make confession a priority, as well as sincerely apologizing to DH. (He can recognize it too and that helps.)

If you struggle in general with perfectionistic tendencies, I very highly recommend therapy.I tried to take care of it in my own (pride) for years, and no surprise that I only got worse.

God bless you!

My DH likes to say that the Devil likes where people are weakest. Right now, the family unit is pretty weak, so this does not surprise me. And yes, I have experienced it often. Frequent confession has helped a ton!

Good post. Sometimes all the evil one has to do is to shield us from what would help us and leave us to our own devices, rather than having to actively tempt us all of the time. C.S. Lewis makes some very insightful points along these lines in The Screwtape Letters:

“…I once had a patient, a sound atheist, who used to read in the British Museum. One day, as he sat reading, I saw a train of thought in his mind beginning to go the wrong way. The Enemy, of course, was at his elbow in a moment. Before I knew where I was I saw my twenty years’ work beginning to totter. If I had lost my head and begun to attempt a defence by argument, I should have been undone. But I was not such a fool. I struck instantly at the part of the man which I had best under my control, and suggested that it was just about time he had some lunch…
…Do remember you are there to fuddle him. From the way some of you young fiends talk, anyone would suppose it was our job to teach!”

You are right on! Great piece of literature!

Thank you for your understanding. I’m hopeful knowing this is something that others have overcome, by the grace of God.

Are there any coping techniques you would be willing to share? I would appreciate any help I can get. I have the ability to think clearly when all is well, but find myself incapable when in the midst of it all.

I wholeheartedly agree with Confession being a top priority. If it weren’t for it, I don’t know where I’d be.

Peace.

Have you spoken to your priest about this?

Before we blame Satan, have you considered Borderline Personality Disorder ?

Sure! I will PM you. 🙂

I’d say you’re ahead of the game by recognizing the work of the evil one. My wife shrugged off the idea that Satan is attacking our marriage. (He totally is)
Prayer is your power. Trust in God. Rely on Him. Remember The Lord said “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Keep fighting and trusting in the Lord. Take refuge in Our Lady.

God Bless

I hate to say it, but I dont see how this is the work of Satan. I say this out of love because it’s actually a trait of certain personality or mood disorders. It seems easy to throw our hands in the air and claim the supernatural but Satan is not some unchained beast who has full authority to change our “feelings” at the drop of the hat. This sounds like a personal issue that should be discussed with a psychologist.

I would be pissed as a husband if my wife was obviously suffering from BPD or Bipolar disorder or depression and instead of fighting it head on just blamed Satan . Being all love filled and needy with your husband then hating him and judging him and questioning your relationship is not normal. Something deeper is going on here

As with so many things, this is not necessarily an “either/or” . . . It may be what a classic “both/and”

I think you should just turn to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Let us also keep in mind that the way you treat and interact with your husband is YOUR decision. That falls under “Free Will”. Both sacred scripture and the Catechism are pretty clear on this. Obviously some choices we make may be influenced by our circumstances, but unless your husband is abusing you or inciting this “ugliness”…he and all husbands deserve a better answer than “Satan made me do it”. Satan can’t MAKE you do anything, that’s our decision. So the next time these “feelings” come up that make you “feel” hostility is warrented towards your husband for whatever the reason…Definitly take a second glance because people can only take so much unearned abuse and “ugliness” before they say “I have had enough”.

You’re absolutely right. I can’t blame the evil one on all of this. I do, however, know he can bait a person on knowing their weaknesses. I know I have the free will to reject sin, but I believe he whispers in our ear all lies to increase the temptation to a fever pitch – very difficult for a person whose weakness he has targeted.

I’m very aware of my responsibility and am looking for ways to cope and have sought forgiveness both from my husband and in confession. Thank you.

Peace.
