Ohhhh my gosh. Even though to my eyes the special effects are dated, this movie still scares me soooooo much. Like an above poster said, it’s the idea behind the whole thing that makes me shake in my boots. The thought of my (or someone close) being posessed by a demon is more terrifying to me than anything else on the planet. Ugh, just talking about it I can feel my eyes prickling with tears. I don’t know why it affects me so much but anything related to The Exorcist sends me crawling into a ball and sucking my thumb 😛

I think it would be an interesting study as to why these ideas so strongly affect some people and doesn’t faze others!

To MartryforJesus, Yes, one of the priest in the movie is a real Jesuit. The priest who plays the piano and is in the final scene as the young girl drives away in the car is William J. O’Malley, SJ. He taught theology at McQuaid Jesuit H.S. in Rochester, New York until the mid 80’s and then was re assigned to Fordam University where he still teaches today. I was a student of his in the late 70’s. Rumor has it he was brought on as a technical advisor to the movie and then was offered a part.
