I am fourteen years old and I go to a Catholic high school, I’m a freshman. A few days ago, I wanted to talk to my friends about morals and we started with birth-control. To my shock, every girl I spoke with, said it was fine and that she was going to use it. To add to this, a fellow classmate carries a condom in his wallet.

A lot of my friends are in drama, and they know a lot of gay people. They say that it’s fine, and if it’s true love, it should be left alone.

I’ve been wondering if I am the only devoute Catholic in the school. The only people that agree with me, are maybe the religion teachers, and the upper classmen, those who actually paid attention in religion.

We live in a time where abortions are commonplace and you can buy condoms in the drugstore for three dollars, what kind of world are we growing up in? How is our faith holding in all of this?

Fortunately, the Church has members like you who DO honor and respect Her teaching. It’s not easy to follow the teachings of Jesus and His Church when we’re surrounded by those who don’t (even those who call themselves “Catholic”).

At fourteen, you have more wisdom than many (probably most) adults. Persevere in your Faith - it will serve you well.

Here in Australia 98 % of school leavers in Catholic schools also leave the faith when they leave school. Wide is the path that leads to destruction, so enter by the narrow path. At your age you have much wisdom. Perhaps our Lord wants you to be His apostle in that school. And He has so few good friends. So please continue to be a good friend. And I’m sure you will.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

Persevere in the truth of your witness! Maybe your friends are trying to sound “cool,” saying they would use birth control, and maybe the young man carries a condom to appear worldly. Do not let them influence you – instead, be the good Catholic that you are.

My son is also a 14-year-old Catholic high school freshman and he lives his faith as you do. He is also in drama, but hasn’t run into the gay issue (yet). He knows he will eventually, but his faith is strong.

I will pray for you and for all young people who struggle with the barrage of evil you deal with at every turn.

Everywhere you look there are ads for birth control. People are desensitized to it. It has become common place. Which doesn’t make it right.

My daughters are also in drama; freshmen like you. They tell me about ‘gay’ friends. At your age I didn’t even know what that meant. Luckily, they have told me that they are waiting for marriage to have any kind of relations. I hope they hold onto that as they get older.

You are a very wise 14 yr. old. Stand firm and don’t let go of your faith. Keep spreading it as you seem to be trying to do. God bless you.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon14.gif

While few people suffering a physical illness would go to an untrained doctor or simply rely on their own “internal voice,” many today are happy to listen to anyone and everyone in the yet more important realms of religion and morality (peers, popstars, politicians, and people making a profit on birth-control and abortion). It is seen as somehow weak or servile to listen to the counsel of spiritual authorities, no matter how long they have studied or the fact that they have devoted their lives to religious pursuits.

Hang tough, PLT. We (the Church) need you. Study and follow true Tradition, and when times get really rough, remember that once there were about 14 Chrisitians on this earth and by the grace of God, they did quite well.

Be confident in knowing there are more teens like you - many are just afraid to state their true opinions because of all the pressure from peers. I commend you for being willing to stand up for your beliefs. Continue to trust in Jesus and He may use you in reaching others your age.

I agree that a Jason Evert seminar or the newly available DVD would be very good for your entire school. Our pro-life committee just ordered one and we’re planning an evening showing with teens and their parents, followed by a potluck dinner for continued discussion.

You might also check with local retreat centers to see if there is a youth group active in your area. Also, Couples for Christ offer youth activities (sometimes called Youth for Christ), and there are TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) retreats. It’s important for you to find friends who are grounded in the Catholic faith so you can encourage and support one another.

I’ll keep you in my prayers!

There’s a reason why we faithful living on earth are called the Church Militant. Walk with God, with your head held high.

Teenage boys tend toe carry condums as a status symbol more than thing else (just in case they get lucky).

Good moral teachings start at home (not the school). There lays your problem. Be proud of your parents and the fact that they brought you up right.

If you can try to get CFC-Youth or Teen Life in your school. (If you need help, I have connections to both)

I arguee with my son’s principal over doctrine all the time. Though I do keep in mind that he has a school to run and looks at the school from the business stand point - sad but true.

If he truly enforced the rules of the Church, parents would pull their students saying it’s to hard to live like a Catholic because that would force the parents to evaluate their life too.

With all that said, I boils down to this. The father is the first pastor the child will ever know.

I too am the only one who seems to care about morals much less the Church. I go to an all boys Catholic school. In fact most of my friends are atheist/agnostic. My friends respect me and I guess I have some influence over them because they have changed their views on certain things.

I admire you for the opinions you hold…It takes a strong person to stand up to friends and enemies. Keep fightin the good fight.

I hope one day, I can become as strong a catholic as you are now…you’ve got a good head on you, keep it there!!!
