I’ve just watched this netflix doco and find it to be a very disturbing expose of what is going on behind the scenes in politics on a global level. Even on Catholic sites I’ve seen males promoting the ideal of a ‘theocratic republic’ and found that to be at odds with Catholicism.

Has anyone watched it?

I watched the first few episodes, It’s one of those things where I’m the only one interested and there are six of us in this house, so it’s slow going.

There’s already a thread in Popular Media on this.

The Family on Netflix? Popular Media
Has anyone seen this? I sat and watched all 5 hours at once. Very interesting. I felt it definitely had an agenda though.

Can you clarify what exactly is being promoted as a “theocratic republic”? What does that term mean and how it relates to or contrasts with Catholicism?

That is their model of government. Men believing they are hand picked by God as the new ‘chosen’ elite, who will rule the nation as representative of the inferior majority.

The Family on Netflix?
Oh I missed that. Wonder why it didn’t pop up when I searched? OK, I’ll continue on the other thread.

I know of it and I don’t care much for it. I don’t have Netflix and I don’t want or need it.

I’m fascinated by Rolling Stone’s use of “homoerotic”. Must everything be sexualised?

I’m sure there are people who want to turn America into a theocracy but they’re doing such a miserable job. They’re so threatening America is becoming the opposite, more secular and New Age.

But it does have that aspect to it. I don’t know if actual sexual activity is involved for some. (ie. pederast) That wasn’t mentioned. But they engage in a relationship of affection, intimacy and vulnerability which is like a marriage normally is. It builds bonds, loyalty, faithfulness between husband and wife to make it the primary relationship in their life. ‘The family’ require that first loyalty be to it. That was demonstrated when Jeffs friend Luke (who had initially introduced him to The Family), got a call saying his fiance had been sexually assaulted and he immediately packed his bags to leave. The group effectively ex communicated him for showing such loyalty to the fiance over the group.

Yeah, that’s not homoerotic. That’s just friendship. Honestly, what is it with the media and sex? Having close friends who people can confide in doesn’t mean the relationship is sexual. They need to get their minds out of the gutter and stop being so sex-obsessed.

“The Family” seem like a crazy bunch. They don’t seem to be God’s gift to the world. I never liked secretive groups. Something about it reminds me about light and works of darkness in the Gospel of John.

Weird. I’ve never heard of that before. Yeah, that’s definitely not Catholic.
