The method of the Early Fathers is to extrapolate allegorical meanings from the Scriptures. For example, the parable of the Prodigal Son is actually apocalyptic in one layer, in that the two sons are the Jews [elder] and Gentiles [young] respectively.
Well, I have a profound theory that one possible allegorical meaning of the story in the finding of the adolescent Jesus in the Temple (this past Sunday’s Gospel Scripture on the Feast of the Holy Family) is that it is a metaphor of how the Jews shall come to accept the Messiah, that is, to find Him in “Temple of God”, the Catholic Church, at the end of the world.
Jesus’ response shall be two-fold: “Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s House?” “Where else did you expect the Messiah to be except in the Catholic Church, as She claimed?”]
and…
Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s Business? “All the time that you [the Jews] were looking for me, the three great ages of Gentile history that fulfilled your very history in the OT, I was ‘about My Father’s business’, redeeming the Gentiles?”]
