Are any of these 5 pillars in the koran…??
prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, and payment of the poor tax is in the Quran. The testimony of faith itself is not.

The Quran commands us to believe, pray, fast, pay the poor tax and perform the pilgrimage, but does not tell us how to do these things. So we take it from the prophet (pbuh&hf) how to enter into Islam, how to pray, how to fast, etcetera.

OK thanks! 😃

The five pillars of Islam are, according to modern Muslims:
  1. Profession of faith
  2. Prayer five times a day
  3. Paying the Zakat
  4. Fasting during Ramadan
  5. Pilgrimage to Kaaba
The five pillars of Islam according to Mohammed (page six of his farewell sermon):
  1. Prayer five times a day
  2. Fasting during Ramadan
  3. Paying the Zakat
  4. Pilgrimage to Kaaba
  5. Obedience to rulers
I wonder who changed the pillars of Islam?
Sorry “Nick” but this post is a little bit ridiculous and so is the ensuing discussion which has taken a decidedly Shi’a slant, with posters seemingly willing to believe anything famdigy says.

I can’t figure out why.

So let me just explain the flaw in your post.

First of all, you have to understand or explain to your audience what a “pillar of Islam” is in the first place. Any particular hadith commanding this that or the other thing does not make those things “pillars.” The statement to obey rulers (after obeying Allah and His Messenger first, by the way) is in the Qur’an, and is an indisputable part of Islam. It’s in the Qur’an, it’s in the hadith (farewell sermon as you posted.) But is it a pillar? Did Muhammad (saws) call it a pillar? Not in the farewell sermon, not according to the translation that you quoted.

So this idea about “pillars” comes from one very specific hadith that I know of, which I will transliterate for you as best I can, as how I memorized it (in Arabic):

Buniyal-Islam 'ala khams: shahaadati an-laa ilaaha illa Allah, wa anna Muhammadan rasool-Ullah, wa iqaami as-salaah, wa ita’i az-zakaah, wa hajj al-bayt, wa as-saumi Ramadan.

This hadith has been recorded in saheeh collections meaning it is a sound, authentic hadith. It means: “Islam is built upon five: testifying there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and establishing the prayer, and paying the poor-due/alms, and pilgrimage to the house, and fasting in Ramadan.”

Sometimes this is translated to say “Islam is built upon five pillars” with the word pillars being implied. This is where the “five pillars” comes from. And it’s why there aren’t three, or six, or seven, etc., pillars.

There are other reports, such as the Hadith Jibreel which also describe these very same five pillars, although without the term “five pillars.” In the Hadith Jibreel the angel Gabriel asks Muhammad (saws) “What is Islam?” and the response is that Islam is to (1) say that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is his Messenger, (2) to pray salaat, (3) to pay zakaat, (4) to fast in Ramadan, and (5) to make the pilgrimage (hajj) for those who can afford it.

Another example is when a bedouin (desert Arab) comes to Muhammad (saws) and asks for the bare minimum he has to do to get into Paradise, and Muhammad (saws) goes through these same things, and does not mention obeying rulers.

It’s very clear that there have always been five pillars, the same five pillars of Islam, and nobody changed them. To say that “modern Muslims” are claiming something that Muhammad did not on this matter is nothing but a lie–the Farewell Sermon does not declare that list of things to be pillars in the first place, and because it was directed exclusively to Muslims, it would not be necessary to mention the first pillar which they would have already taken part in anyway.

It’s also clear that obeying rulers is an indisputable part of Islam, even though it is not now and has never been one of the five pillars.

Here is the ayah from the Qur’an, it is 4:59: O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you.

Though I will repeat again, that obeying rulers is not and has never been a pillar of Islam.

AsSalum o Aleikum Sister,
long time no speak, you still study?
say that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is his Messenger,
This i more consistent with the Islamic religion i know and the Quran in contrast with
To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah **and **Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle
I take issue with the worship Muhammad (pbuh)as i do often at the Mosque on Fridays the Imam claims him as his master.

My argument is you would do better with Allah as your master.

By His will and your submitting may Allah bless and guide you to the right path

what is the problem with calling him our master / sayidna (in arabic) ?
actually we call all prophets of God by our master
and we call the companions of our prophets by our masters
seems to me you just misunderstand the concept

actually , we can’t use this word with God ( at least i’m talking about the rabic word i use)
as for this word can be apply to humans only

AsSalum o Aleikum,
yes maybe i can now research this word.
My thinking is i only have one Master and that would b Allah.

Clearly and like i explain at the Mosque i would be a hopeless Muslim as i dont speak Arabic. and the Arabic words i do say are in my language in my heart.

May Allah bless and Guide you and yours as youes submit unto Him
