Hello.

I was wondering, it is good to ask for gifts from God, such as the gift of healing?

St John of the Cross says not to go looking for signs. The devil can trick a person looking for signs.

Which is right?
Please reply!

Thanks

Yes, it is good to ask God for gifts, but I think your prayer should not take on the form of “God please give me the gift of healing”. the Holy Spirit dispenses as He sees fit to build the kingdom of God in the Wisdom of God. A better way to pray is to make an effort to be open to the Lord and however He chooses to use you. You may not recieve a charism, but you will recieve Christ.

I think that it is good to ask God for gifts.

If you feel a pull to ask for the gift of healing, that may be the Lord prompting you. So, ask with an openess to all His gifts, fruits, and charisms.

You can ask God for “graces”. They are certainly gifts. I would leave it up to Him, though… to determine which graces He sends. Because He knows what is best for each of us. He knows what we each, really need. God bless.

I don’t know about feeling a pull towards asking God for the gift of healing.
The thing is, sometimes i feel jealous of those with the gift of healing. How can I deal with this temptation/sin? How can I overcome this?

The simple answer, Vanessa… pray. Ask Our Lord for clarity. Feelings of jealousy are an indication that the desire for the gift of healing isn’t from God.

Maybe when you start to feel this “pull”… maybe you can repeat the prayer of Our Lord during His agony… “… yet not My will but Thine be done” (Luke 22:43). Hope this helps. 🙂

Please be aware that much is given, much is expected.
For whatever gift we recieve from the Lord, there comes along with responsibilities also.
Gift such as healing is not for us to keep but for us to use for others’ benefits.

I know someone who has the gift of healing is very busy in serving due to large demands. I also know some case that the person received the gift of healing after being healed from a fatal illness.

When you feel jealous of other people’s healing gift, first ask yourself if you are willing to take the responsibility or going through purgation before receiving that gift. Though it is not necessary that everyone has to go through trials before receiving.

I admit that being a charismatic Catholic makes me a little biased, but I must confess that I believe firmly that not only you can but you* should* ask for charismatic gifts. As great as a saint as St. John of the Cross was, St. Paul teaches this explicitly, "Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. " (1 Corinth. 14: 1 RSV).

What are the spiritual gifts St. Paul says we should earnestly desire? They are found earlier, in 1 Corinth. 12: “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” (1 Corinth. 12: 5-12)

One of these gifts is the gift of healing. Healing, like other charisms, is given for the upbuilding of the body of Christ. When individuals are prayed over and healed, it can be a life-changing event.

I would encourage all Catholics to pray for spiritual gifts. Charismatic gifts are very influential in my spiritual life, and I have experienced some of the charisms spoken of in scripture.

Let me give a word of caution though. One should not seek charismatic gifts to be feathers in your cap. This can be spiritually dangerous. One should seek charismatic gifts for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ. When charismatic gifts are used properly they lead to growth in holiness. When used improperly they can have a destructive property. I say this with caution; do not worry so much about this, the Holy Spirit will purify your motivations.

It should be remembered that any Christian can pray for healing of someone else. To pray over someone for healing one does not have to have a license, just a charitable heart to desire the healing of somebody’s pain.

I hope this helped.

Our Lord tells us that we donot receive because we donot ask, therefore the gifts are for all who ask (and God gives) but they are not and I believe I am right in saying they are NOT a “sign” they are for us to bless others so that the blessing can go back to God.

Godbless.

Vanessa, I too had asked for this gift of healing so that I could heal others - little did I know I was the one who needed to be healed - from all the things that I caused to my soul and to other souls whom I know.

Hi Water
How true for all of us I believe, and the beat goes on and on and on. Every time we have healing it enlightens us to how little we are beside God and so the need of healing goes on, for me any way.
I have used the gift of healing on many occasions, been asked to go to people to different towns and yet I asked God why He never sent me someone to help with my marrage and it never came.
Took me a lot of healing for that.

I guess this is a question for godlovestrength, but anyone who has some advice from experiance (no theory please, i have aenough of that on my own) would be greatly appreciated. I do not particularly desire the gift a healing, but for years now i feel that God is pushing (or pulling, or leading) me in that direction. I am getting this more and more in prayer, and I do not believe it to be the voice of anything other than either my own imagination or God. I can’t say that I really desire the gift, only that if it is God’s will then I will accept it. I don’t know how to go about discerning this sort of thing. God has given me an extraordinary gift of preaching and teaching, and I can see how a gift like this would compliment my ministry in spreading the Gospel, but I am reluctant to just start praying for healings without first discerning the Will of God. Any advise from people with a legitamate charism of healing?

I feel God gives us the gifts as we need to serve Him. “God’s grace is sufficient for me” for His power if perfected in my weakness. When God calls and leads us to minister in different ways and we are obedient to that call, He then provides His gift to us to do His job. Like if God calls you to love on a person who is ill and you feel his leading to offer a gentle touch and even a silent prayer, that person can be healed by God’s power. Sometimes that person may not experience physical healing but will receive an even more important spiritual healing that you might not understand. God may desire for you to teach but you feel totally unequipped to do so. That means you’re perfect for the job! God will give you the gift of teaching so you don’t do it on your own human ability and risk messing it up. lol

The gift of healing is a legitimate charism. Sometimes, those with the gift the healing lead people to full healing, some partial, sometimes not at all.

God can work through anyone. What is required is a humble, charitable heart that desires to see human suffering limited. Just simply lay hands on somebody and ask God to heal them of their ailment, whether it is a simple headache or cancer.

If medical problems persist then you should seek medical attention. God has given doctors the knowledge they need to alleviate much suffering (but not all).

Hi Glenaitkin.
There are many who wish to have a gift and they share how it would be so good, but to believe, feel, wonder if God is leading you this way is to go into the realm of God taking over a part of your life. And that is so beautifull that our God would do so, if it is His will.

And that is all I have ever wanted, to be lead, used, and desirour of God to do with me what He wishes. Your situation is for you to know that the will of God is what is leading you. Even though you do say that it would be good to impliment healing with other gifts you use.

Well it may seem to you, however be weary about that because God’s will is not ours. Remember the corner stone was the one rejected. Meaning that God’s ways are so far removed from ours that your thoughts could be in line with God or so fare away from God’s thoughts as far as healing gifts ( there are many different forms of healing) is concerned.

Give your life over to God, tell Him you wish His will on you and then DON’T lead but allow Him to do what ever He wishes.
I have found that ALL gifts are very wonderful some more than others in my life, however it all has to be the will of God without your interviening.

“the peson who relys on the Lord relys on wisdom to lead them and will not move until wisdome takes it’s place for the will of God to become the centre of your thoughts”

Godbless.

thanks godlovestrength. i don’t think i’m in the way, 'm following the best I can, its just something that keeps coming up in prayer that i’m not even aking for or thinking about. i’ll keep praying

Good for you, I don’t think you are either buit that’s just me.
I believe your heart seems to be towards God’s will being done.

I realised the gifts when I believe Our Lord told me to read the new testement the first time and I read the part that tells us that “if you have faith the size of a mustard seed then you can move mountains”.
I first thought now why would Jesus say that we could move mountains why would we? then I realised that mountains are objects in our way, so I thought about it. At the time I was cleaning up an area covered with paper particals, and it was windy.I prayed “Wind in the name of Jesus I command you to stop while I do my work”! Well the wind stopped and I thought mmmm this could just be the wind, it started spitting so I did the same commanded the rain and the drops stopped, OK!. I thought.

I went fishing with a friend and he said we should turn back it was too rough instantainiously I stood up and commanded the waves in the name of Jesus to be still and it was still,
A person called me around to their home their back was too painful would I help, I went around and the spirit took over I told her one leg was longer than the other I prayed and the leg ( in front of three people) grew to the length of the other leg.

I cannot count the amount of miricals, healings it does not matter some people remind me at times that does not matter either, as long as God is being glorified.
The Holy Spirit will help you keep on praying to Him

Godbless
