"I was wondering, it is good to ask for gifts from God, such as the gift of healing?
St John of the Cross says not to go looking for signs. The devil can trick a person looking for signs."
I admit that being a charismatic Catholic makes me a little biased, but I must confess that I believe firmly that not only you can but you* should* ask for charismatic gifts. As great as a saint as St. John of the Cross was, St. Paul teaches this explicitly, "Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. " (1 Corinth. 14: 1 RSV).
What are the spiritual gifts St. Paul says we should earnestly desire? They are found earlier, in 1 Corinth. 12: “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” (1 Corinth. 12: 5-12)
One of these gifts is the gift of healing. Healing, like other charisms, is given for the upbuilding of the body of Christ. When individuals are prayed over and healed, it can be a life-changing event.
I would encourage all Catholics to pray for spiritual gifts. Charismatic gifts are very influential in my spiritual life, and I have experienced some of the charisms spoken of in scripture.
Let me give a word of caution though. One should not seek charismatic gifts to be feathers in your cap. This can be spiritually dangerous. One should seek charismatic gifts for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ. When charismatic gifts are used properly they lead to growth in holiness. When used improperly they can have a destructive property. I say this with caution; do not worry so much about this, the Holy Spirit will purify your motivations.
It should be remembered that any Christian can pray for healing of someone else. To pray over someone for healing one does not have to have a license, just a charitable heart to desire the healing of somebody’s pain.
I hope this helped.
God bless,
