The Gloria and Advent

During Advent I noticed we are not singing the “Gloria” at mass, is there a reason for this?

The Church directs us to omit the Gloria during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent. This is found both in the Ordo and in the rubrics.

And, the words of the Gloria, at least the first lines, are taken from the Angelic proclamation of Jesus’ birth…which we are preparing for. To say it on Sundays of Advent would be getting ahead of ourselves. (But, we still say it on Solemnities and Feasts during Advent.)
