A) Did my patron saint really write it?
B) Why do the Gnostics adore it?
C) Would it do me any spiritual good at all to read it?

I’m curious about it and I really don’t know much about it. Sorry if this is taboo or something because it’s so closely associated with Gnosticism, but I remember hearing about it and want to know what it’s all about and if St. Thomas (pray to God for us!) really did write it.

it is not a gospel which by definition is one of the 4 books so identified in the Catholic Canon of scripture

it was not written by St. Thomas the apostle, who died long before it was written

it is not an example of an extra-canonical early Christian writing because it is Gnostic in origin, the product of an anti-Catholic sect.

I have no idea why anyone other than a scholar would waste their time with it, and I can’t imagine why a Christian would want to spend time on anything other than divinely revealed truth.

If we’re in a spiritual battle though shouldn’t we know what we’re up against? And couldn’t reading it provide a contrast to the Truth which would help us see the beauty of that Truth as we compare it to falsehood?..just another approach to that.

HMC, to my knowledge, has not condemned the reading of the Gnostic gospels…just remember that it is a non-canonical, non-inspired work of fiction.

Read it as such and you should be alright.
