We are supposed to fast in secret. It is not to become a source of pride. The Church emphasizes this with a week of no fasting after the Sunday of the publican and the sinner, which precedes Great Lent.
 
I should also add that the “secrecy” of the fast in church facilitates the purpose of not “scandalizing” those who struggle with the fast.

… in other words…it promotes humility all the way around.
