The greater evil: poverty or abortion

But is poverty in the United States being on welfare, having a home, tv, food, clothes, and free medical care. I don’t think that is poverty.

When you see the truly poor such as the countless numbers living in countries such as India, there is no welfare, home, tv, food, clothes, or free medical. It is truly a blessing if one is even be able to scrape up enough dung for ones next meal.

That’s true. As it is for many in the Asia, Melanesia, Africa, and parts of South and Central America.

There is absolute poverty and relative poverty.

Relative Poverty is what some people are talking about above - the kind that exists in the USA, where some are poorer than others but still live in the rich percentage of the world.

Absolute Poverty is, of course, not much of a blessing for those affected.

Though I don’t think he’s necessarily got all the right answers, Jeffrey Sachs book ‘The End of Poverty’ is full of great information on the true face of poverty.

But even those deprived of freedom still have life. Is life ‘only worthy’ of living in certain 'conditions? Is it truly better to be ‘dead’ than to be POOR? Better to be dead than ‘not free’ --whatever your definition of freedom is? And what is your definition of poverty? One man’s ‘poverty’ is another’s WEALTH.

And if you’re murdered in abortion you never have the chance either to live in an ‘enriching environment’ OR to enrich the world with the gift of your presence.

I would suggest that many people who are rich are poor in spirit, but no higher a percentage that poor people who are poor in spirit.

I think people like Anna Nicole Smith and Brittany Spears are both rich and poor in spirit. And I think the drug addict stealing to support his habit may be officially classed as poor, but is also poor in spirit.

Generally speaking, when I think poor in spirit, I think of holiness, not depravity.

Blessed are the poor in spirit…

I think humility.
