From the simple, yet learned corn-growing Midwest of the United States of America I lament. Growing up, my favorite stories were the Lord of the Rings and this seems so much like not only the story but the movie as well when the fellowship was so disheartened. It is like a death in the family to all Catholics worldwide and I can only hope that brothers and sisters of all Christian communities and from other religions will see the grace of Our Eternal Fathers’ kids here on earth who cry when they see the passing of so great a Father in the Holy Spirit. As an artist I intend to try my best to do some portrait work of this great man whose share in the everlasting and glorious Empyrean will One Day (I capitalize this because of a poem I wrote about eternity) be astonishing to us all. A young acquaintence that I had met who was a devout Catholic layman that was my age (late 20’s) worked at a local Mexican restaraunt here in Decatur, Illinois. His name was Hector and I had once asked him about his faith and he showed me that he was wearing ‘el Scapulara,’ and he also prayed the ‘Sancta Rosario’ for his family. I just recently heard that he and a relative had died in a carwreck down South on one of his visits home. I can now joke with my friends and say things like, ’ Our Lord has made for him a huge gymnasium and a place that has all the most beautiful things and places of Mexico.’ Maybe they named the gym ‘the Hectorium.’ I wonder what our recent holy father’s library will be named? Most likely ‘Divine Mercy,’ which was one of his favorite devotions. Not to take up too much space, I think I know who the next holy father will be. Cardinal Walter Kasper, as Saint Malachy put it, ‘from the glory of the olive.’ Well, I have an olive-wood Rosary from Bethlehem. How ironic. It just may be the right time for such a good man and Servant of the servants of God. But for our saint which this is speaking of, May his place be glorious in the kingdom of heaven, so far removed from this vale of tears so full of leaven. May the philosophers greet and rejoice with a king, a man who could only see the good in everyone and everything. The glories of Elysium and her gloriously golden fields, shall forever sing of his harvest and the good that it yields. A son has gone home from the labor of the sun, how much joy did he bring and still prays for everyone. Viva Saint John Paul II.
