As in how we also have common sense, imagination/memory, and estimative ”senses” as well (of which intellection would be encompassed)

http://www.aquinasonline.com/Topics/intsense.html

So would intellect be different from sensation in the purely classical sense (ie. When thinking of the ”5 senses”)?

But then, as per the principle of non-contradiction and the logical fallacy of engaging in the ”double standard” (how can intellect be a sense but not be a sense in the classical manner?):

How can intellection, or the ability to use the intellect, exist at all?

The intellect is a spiritual power of the human soul which means it operates or functions independently of the body or any bodily organ analogous to angels who are pure spirits and angelic intellects and God himself for humans are made in his image and likeness principally in their spiritual powers of intellect and will. We do not lose the operation of our intellect and will when we die here on earth and our soul leaves the body and goes to meet God in the immediate judgement where we either go immediately to heaven and enjoy God for eternity, purgatory, or hell.

The human soul also has sensory powers like the brute animals and these powers of the soul only operate through the body or bodily organs such as the five external senses. There are also interior sense powers such as the imagination and sensory memory. Although the spiritual powers of intellect and will operate independently of the body as they are spiritual powers, in this life here on earth these spiritual powers of the human soul need the proper operation of the lower sensory powers of the soul and the organs or parts of the body they operate through to function correctly for humans are a composite being of spirit or soul and body. For human beings here on earth, all intellectual knowledge comes through the senses. The process by which the intellect derives its knowledge from the lower sensory powers of the soul is called abstraction.

If I knew what I was talking about your post is exactly what I would’ve said.
😉

But when we die, we can’t use our intellect any more than we can use our senses…

So how can the terms be distinct ?

Is it sufficient to simply say that intellect is distinct from the senses because intellectual knowledge comes from what is sensed?

As I said, the intellect operates independently of the body even when it is in the body. It is a spiritual and immaterial power. It is not made out of matter or any physical force. Consequently, the intellect can operate apart from the body which it does as well as our will when we die. We can’t use our senses when we die because the soul is not longer united to the body and the sense powers need the body to function. We have to wait for the resurrection of the body for this.

The intellect and will are distinct from the senses because they are spiritual powers of the soul. The lower sensory powers of the soul which only function through the body are not spiritual powers per se. The senses only operate through the composite being, that is, the composite of the soul and body.

Since the intellect can still operate without the body, but does not have any physical sensation outside the body, i wonder what that would be like? Would we still have awareness, or the capacity for imagination?

People that have near death experiences claim that they experience things and people in the room around them including their body. Is this consistent with your view? Near death experiences tend to suggest some kind of sensation.
