If you truly think they are that bad with representing Catholicism, then has anyone seen how off the mark they are with other faiths in their programs?
The thing is when they have a show about the “end times” or the “rapture” they always seem to have Jerry Fallwell, John Hagee, and the guys who wrote the Left Behind series on there. But if it is a show about the Catholic faith or something from Catholic History, there is a shortage of experts, it seems.

BTW, the Opus Dei special was on last night about midnight so I Tivoed it. I’ll watch it and let you all know if they portray it in the same light as some other tv shows/movies have lately. If anyone wants to watch it I’m sure it will be on again. You can get the DVD, its called Decoding the Past: Opus Dei Revieled, I think.

Actually a lot of them aren’t very accurate lately. My husband would tell you the same thing. We were both history majors in college and we’ve actually pulled out our old textbooks to check on some little facts on things they’ve stated. But of course no one’s perfect! 🤷
did it ever occur to you that the facts maybe have changed or new things have been discovered since?

“Facts” don’t change. We do learn to look at things in a new way, and yes, occasionally, new things are discovered.

Every Easter or Christmas one thing you can count on is that these channels will have shows with anti-catholic/christian themes. It’s a given.

mommyof4 is correct. Facts do not change. Yes I do realize that new things are discovered from ancient times and we have to change our views of such things but unless I’m mistaken, things such as dates and outcomes of Civil War battles, World War II, or the American Revolution haven’t changed. I remember specifically watching a program on the Battle of Shiloh that concerned some Union generals and since one particular general was focused on, they didn’t seem to care about getting everything else about the battle historically accurate. Dates and times were wrong as well as where certain aspects of the battle occured. This is what I mean by other things on the History Channel being inaccurate.

The two religious themed HC shows I caught tried to show “proof” that aliens actually are the “angels” mentioned in the Bible, and one even suggested that Mary was impregnated by an alien. It was almost laughable, if I didn’t think impressionable people were not watching and believing!

I just watched the Opus Dei program that the History Channel had on. And they started out saying that it was going to be members of Opus Dei explaining what it was about and saying how it was good, etc, etc. on the introduction… But what did it end up being…a show that had about 3-4 actual Opus Dei members and about 10 who had left Opus Dei because they thought it was a cult, they even had cult intervetionists on it. Even DH thought they were being horrible and he’s Methodist. Basically the underlying point of the show was that Opus Dei is a cultist sect of the Catholic Church.

Don’t get your religious history or religious information from the history channel they have been constantly biased against Catholicism and yes many of their holocaust specials give a dig into Pope Pius XII the usual cheap shot and the stuff of history redux of course they don’t go after FDR who refused Jews to enter into American harbors but they dig into Pius XII for saved tens of thousands of Jews from sure termination many times by means of church protection in her convents and Churches. But hey its only history we are reinventing thus they should be called the redux history channel.

I heard Scott Hahn is an Opus Dei member and he loves it. I am not one for daily structured per the instruction of a superior and regular reporting to a superior as it the practice of Opus Dei thus I would never join but for those who seek to advance their spirituality via these kinds of structured means and some people thrive and desire such means than I don’t see anything wrong with it. But neither do I think the group is for everyone, Catholicism has a wide means of spirituality other than Opus Dei whether it be Franciscan, Dominican, Benedictine, Ignatian etc we don’t all have to be in Opus Dei to experience a high level of spirituality, the cahtholic church is a big tent and we all have our preferences but we shouldn’t limit other people to our preferences I may not dig Opus Dei but for those that do good for them.

I have enjoyed the Decoding Christianity shows. The presenter appears to be a non-practicing Irish Catholic but I haven’t found the show to be particularly anti-catholic.

Wait, just realized that is on the Smithsonian Channel not the History Channel. Direct TV is great… 1000 channels… mostly duplications and pay for view. Great that is unless it is raining and then there are no channels.🤷

Sorry, didn’t mean to hijack the thread.
