Hello all,

I have just recently learned about the holy flame in the “Church of the Resurrection” in the holy land. Does anyone else know of this miracle? If so is it true that only the Orthodox are able to receive the holy flame? I have read claims that the Armenians and the Roman Catholics were unable to do so. Are there any Orthodox christians that can explain this.

I’m Orthodox and yes this particular miracle only occurs on Orthodox Pascha and only when an Orthodox Patriarch enters the tomb. He then comes out of the tomb and distributes the fire to the faithful present. What is most amazing is the fire flashes with a bright blue light, spontaneously lights candles around the room and doesn’t burn human flesh. It also split a column in the Church centuries ago and that column is still present.

As to why it only occurs for an Orthodox Patriarch I can’t explain why. I can only say that God’s ways are not our ways.

Here’s a link to a youtube video of a pilgrim washing his hand in the fire, also there are a number of videos of the miracle linked to from this page.

And a link to a website that may be of interest.

Yours in Christ
Joe
