Why is Mary seemingly mentioned in the same breath as Jesus and even God?
My friend keeps telling me that and asking about it.

So I ask why is she treated so greatly?

Other than being the Mother of Jesus.

Well to be honest, no.
I have no problem, I am simply asking out of curiosity.

Mary is the mother of Jesus.

Jesus is God, therefore

Mary is the Mother of God, the mother of Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity.

How can one have the proper devotion and respect for Jesus when they can’t even extend the proper devotion and respect for His mother?

What Catholic Believe about the Blessed Virgin Mary

First of All Catholics DO NOT WORSHIP Mary. Secondly, Catholics do not place Mary on the same level as her Son Jesus. Indeed, Mary’s Gifts; each and every one of them stem directly from the merits of Her Son Jesus!

Catholic “reverance Mary,” NOT WORSHIP, which is a term and practice reservered for God Alone.

LUKE 1: 26-36 in the clearest possible language makes clear that 1. Jesus is God, 2. Mary is the Mother of Jesus, 3. therefore Mary is “the Mother of God.”

Because God is and Has to be perfect; it was necessary that Mary too “be made Perfect” so that Jesus would come into the world as Perfect God and perfect man. [No option here.] This is a miracle, accomplished by God.[Through the merits of Jesus].

One need only look at Exodus chapters 26-28, which deal with Yahweh God commanding Moses in very precise terms and methods on building God’s “Ark of the Covenant.”

“PURE-GOLD” [refined and purified] were specified. If Yahweh demanded this kind of purety for His “Spiritual-Presence”, how much GREATER would be His expectations for for the bodily home of His Actual Son in the Flesh of Jesus be?

All that is accomplished in the Redemption and salvation of mankind, has its roots, in Mary saying YES to what God was ASKING of her. Therefore,neither Redemption or salvation would have taken place were it not for the freewill decision of NEVER saying NO to God ever by the teenage Virgin, Mary!

Mary will you be the Mother of God: YES!

Mary will you go to Bethlehem [have Jesus in a CAVE] YES!

Mary [40 days later] : “A sword of sorow will pierce your heart.” “Mary: Do with me as you say.”

Mary will you leave everyone and everything and move to [pagan] Egypt? YES!

Mary will you move to Nazerath [to fulfill scripture]? YES!

Mary will you allow Me to take your Son from you [At Cana] “Do what ever He tells you.”

Jesus from the Cross. Women will you be the Mother of all humanity? YES!

**John.19: 26 **When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home."

Never in human history has one human person played a more signifiant role in humanities salvation. Never has there been a person [soley human] who has suffered as severily as did Mary. Never in human history has a person never said NO to Her God, no matter what was asked of her. Never has a person been [made] more perfect, more obedient, more humble, more pious than Mary. Mary never ever sinned! [Thanks to the graces merited through Jsus].

Just as Christ assumed the role of the New Adam; off-setting his Orginal sin; so to Mary assumed the role of the New Eve, and by her actions and suffering, off set Eve’s Original sin. And yes, it is God who forgave both.

It is for all of these reasons, that Mary having been perfected as a necessaery singular grace in order to be prepared to become the Mother of The Christ,[means SAVIOR], the most perfect role model for humanity, and by a special grace from God; our Spiritual Mother, and the most effective Intercessor God could provide us with, that She is highly reverenced, and respected by we her children.

No BODY has done more, suffered more, loved more on our behalf than our VERY BLESSED MOTHER MARY 😃

Mary like the human Nature of Jesus Himself fulfilled the precept: “Be Perfect as I am Perfect.”

It is not a silly question. Protestants and many Catholics these days feel that Mary is given way too much honor and respect. In fact, that is more than likely one of the direct results of the Vatican Council itself. Let me explain. One of the reasons for the Council itself, some would argue the greatest single reason, was ecumenism and the re-unification of the Eastern and Western Churches. One of the biggest differences between Catholics and Protestants is the way in which Mary is viewed. In fact it was said that many of those in attendance at the Council felt overt displays of Marian devotion in some places threatened to eclipse the view as Jesus as the Savior:eek:

After the Council it became the self appointed duty of many of the Clergy to completely downplay Mary and her role in salvation. The Rosary was deemed to be an old time devotion no longer relevant to modern Catholics. Statues were removed. Prayers and hymns re-worded or forgotten completely and public and private devotions to Mary pretty much thrown out and to a large extent in many areas forgotten as relics of a bygone era. I have heard Mary referred to as nothing more than a mighty prayer warrior by noted Catholic speakers, theologians and more than a few Clergy. It was I think one of the bigger non intended acts that sprang forth after the Council.

Thankfully, Pope John Paul II came into power and reversed that trend crediting the Virgin with saving his life in the assassination attempt against him,. He said that he saw her in the crowd and turned to look. That caused the bullet to miss it’s intended area and thus saved him from a fatal wound. He, the Holy Father, had always had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin and made no secret of that fact. That single event did more to promote and restore Marian devotion than did anything else.

Today, many of those who initially claimed that Mary was given too much honor and respect are still around, often in places of authority within the Church, Directors of religious education comes immediately to mind. many of them hold this view. Indeed, in my years of a catechist I met literally dozens of them at religious conferences around the country.

A very very sad situation.
 
I really never thought this an issue.
I pray to God, I pray for/to the Holy Mother and I am not sure if Jesus has a prayer all his own but I still always thought our Mother to be merely a beautiful vessel of the father, worthy of admiration and reverence.

Basically, I saw it as loving a Father and Mother. I love both, I will never choose between them as it would feel like going against the other.

MANY! But the one I say dozens of times every day while making the sign of the cross:

“LORD JESUS CRHIST, SON OF THE LIVING GOD, HAVE MERCY ON ME A SINNER.”
 
I mean prayers such as “Our Father” or “Hail Mary”. Any for Jesus.

I am glad you found some. Here is one of my favorite. I also love prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Prayer before a Crucifix

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus
while before Your face I humbly kneel and,
with burning soul,
pray and beseech You
to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments
of faith, hope, and charity;
true contrition for my sins,
and a firm purpose of amendment.

While I contemplate,
with great love and tender pity,
Your five most precious wounds,
pondering over them within me
and calling to mind the words which David,
Your prophet, said to You, my Jesus:

“They have pierced My hands and My feet,
they have numbered all My bones.”

Amen.
 
When one praises and rejoices in an artist’s work, one therefore gives the honor to the creator of the piece. He has put in his talent and skill, which is reflected by his masterpiece. One can not compliment an art piece on its beauty but then remark that the artist has no skill.

The same goes for God and the Theotokos. When we praise her we do so as the finest creature of God. God preserved her from original sin. God kept her free from personal sin by His grace throughout her life. God assumed her into heaven body and soul. God crowned her in glory.

Catholicism is not an ‘either/or’ religion.
