Does it bother anyone else when you see a homeless person on a street corner with their
dog? I live in the southwest where during the summer temperatures can be anywhere from
101 to 120. The homeless person makes the choice to go sit by the freeway or on a street corner in the hot sun, but the pet has no choice.
Yesterday, I saw a homeless man, probably in
his late 20’s, early 30’s, sitting by a freeway exit with a pitbull by his side. He was trying to shade the dog with a small umbrella, but the umbrella kept falling over. The dog was panting and obviously in distress. It was probably 105 or 106 yesterday. I was wishing I had a water bottle in my car to offer for the
dog.
Should homeless people be allowed to have pets? If they cannot provide shelter for themselves and food, how are they caring for their pets?
This is something that has bothered me for a long time, but I just decided to post a thread on it today after seeing the dog yesterday.

I am sure the homeless person would rather sit in an air conditioned room if he has the choice to do that, unless he is mentally unwell so his judgment is off, in which case he AND the dog should be helped to a cool place.

I do not see how taking a pit away from a homeless person, sticking it in a shelter that likely has pretty bad conditions, and then euthanizing it because there are too many pits and not enough pit adopters is going to help anything. If the man is holding shade over the dog, he is trying to care for it. Help him care for it.

That dog is probably the only source of unconditional love that man gets and I’m sure he is caring for it the best he can. If I had to live hand to mouth you’d better believe I would have to love whatever I was sharing my meager sustenance with.

This was after wishing you had a bottle of water to offer the man, right?

Of course, the animal is a companion or a source of comfort to the homeless, but does that mean the animal has to suffer or be neglected? I don’t like to see animal abuse.

The homeless man has 2 legs to walk into any restaurant and ask for water. The dog
depends on the man to make sure it has water when he is made to sit out in the sun.

I don’t know if shelters provide space for animals or pets.

And the homeless man was at the freeway
exit asking for money.

I was not where he was, but was stopped at the light some distance away.

How about should we as a Nation have anyone on the street who is homeless? I don’t have much sympathy for pitbulls. We need to help the homeless and there are far too many people not getting help. We are spending our money on pets, cosmetics, technology, cars, and trucks, vacations, entertainment, lawns, insecticides, food, food and more food. But do we have funds for those without insurance? Do we have enough shelters, drug and alcohol rehabs? Do we have enough training for job placements? Do we have enough counselors to help more people? No. Not hardly enough funding for our own citizens who are more important then any animal. You are right it is cruel to have a dog out in 106 degrees; but even worse for a person begging in 106 degree weather. And what about the danger to the drivers at these intersections? Plus you have no idea if this person begging is also dangerous to society., We destroyed ,years ago ,any institutions for the mentally ill. Do we have enough group homes run by morally ,caring staff to help those who suffer from mental illness? We already are killing the unborn by structures of sin in our nation for decades and what will we do regarding the homeless in the next few years? Let’s hope by then we will have had a conversion.

I would love never to see a homeless person
on the streets ever again. When I was growing up I never saw a homeless person.
I didn’t notice the homeless until the 1980’s
when I moved to a large city in the southwest.

If the homeless man had been sitting in the heat with a 3 or 4 year old child under the umbrella, I am sure people would have been
outraged. I think this animal deserves someone be concerned for its welfare too.
