Saturday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a Holy Day of Obligation. The Immaculate Conception remains a Holy Day of Obligation, even if December 8 naturally falls either on a Saturday or on a Monday, because Mary, under this title, is the Patroness of the United States.

To my fellow Catholics of the Latin/Roman Rite in the United States, this is just a friendly reminder that we are obligated to attend Mass twice, this coming weekend. Here are all of the possible ways for you to attend Mass, in order to fulfill both the obligation for the Immaculate Conception, as well as for the Sunday obligation (With each option, the first Mass listed will satisfy the Immaculate Conception obligation, and the second Mass listed will satisfy the Sunday obligation):

Options 1 and 2: A Mass on Friday evening + A Mass on either Saturday evening or on Sunday

Options 3 and 4: A Mass on Saturday (before Saturday evening) + A Mass on either Saturday evening or on Sunday

Options 5 and 6: A Mass on Saturday evening + Either another Saturday evening Mass (after the first one attended) or a Mass on Sunday

NOTE: NO two-for-one’s/two-fer’s allowed!

NOTE: By the Code of Canon Law (Canon 1248.1), and as outlined above in Options 5 and 6, attending the Saturday evening Mass can still fulfill the obligation for the Immaculate Conception (even though the Mass celebrates the Second Sunday of Advent), as it is still a Mass on the day itself. However, if that’s the first Mass that one attends, then they must still attend another Mass, either later on, that same evening (Of course, after the first Mass that they attended), or some time on Sunday, in order to fulfill the Sunday obligation. The Mass on Saturday evening can fulfill either the Immaculate Conception obligation or the Sunday obligation, but not both at once. The two obligations are distinct, and therefore, they require attendance at two separate Masses. One cannot attend just one Mass, in the hopes of fulfilling both obligations.

Don’t we already have an entire long thread on this same subject?

NO double dipping on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Dec. 8 Liturgy and Sacraments
It’s been in the bulletin but I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad Father announced it this week at Mass even though it was a month early. Father made sure that he told us we MUST go to 2 separate Masses for the Holy Day in December—Feast of the Immaculate Conception which falls on A Saturday. . We cannot go to one Mass to count for the Holy Day and the Sunday Mass. 2 SEPERATE MASSES—no “double dipping”. Glad he did say that so there would be NO question.

Wait. What’s the Day of Obligation that we don’t attend it it falls on Monday. Isn’t that the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God?

In the US, Mary Mother of God, All Saints, and Assumption have the obligation abrogated if they fall on Saturday or Monday.

Mary, Mother of God (January 1), The Assumption (August 15), and All Saints (November 1) are not obligatory, if the day falls either on a Saturday or on a Monday.

Yes, but it’s good to have a reminder the week before it occurs (Or, in this case, less than a week before).

Otherwise, people are just going to go on Saturday evening, and think that by going to that Mass, that they’re covered for both obligations, which is not the case, at all.

This Friday/ Saturday i am blessed to have the possibility of going to church 3 times

Here in New Zealand. We also have a rosary crusade for life. The nearest one to me is 46km away at 3pm on Friday ( If I can find someone to pick up the kids from school I am planning on going) there is a small chance I may go to Wellington for the pro life march however I may not get back in Time for the solemnity of Mary in which case I will have to go to a church 70 something km away, and if i do this i will have to find someone to babysit the kids in the morning and take the kids to school for me, although the kids being at a catholic school the school mabye ok with me taking them with me and them missing a day of school ( schools don’t like parents not sending kids to school without a good reason)

Then the church 600 meters up the road from me has the vigil mass of the solemnity of Mary this year at 7pm ( this is the only one for the whole district unless I want to drive 70 something km one way to go to a church outside our district) which still may happen if I decide to go to Wellington.

And Saturday at 5.30 we are planning on going to the Sunday Vigil mass at a church 27km away ( we prefer the smaller church with the kids even though it’s a bit of a drive but normally have dinner afterwards at Fiancees parents)

So Sorry for my ramble and my terrible spelling and lack of punctuation guys it’s 6am here and ive been up since 4.30. Cleaning up and making sure everything is perfectly clean my Fiance has invited family ( a Aunty and cousin I haven’t met) over on Thursday on there way to the pro life march

I’ve never seen a parish that didn’t put reminders in the bulletin, and most of them also announce it from the pulpit on the preceding Sunday.

I am attending 3 Masses. We have 3 Masses this weekend - one Friday evening and one at noon on Saturday attended by thousands that the Bishop leads along with a procession and a third Mass on Sunday.

Sadly, I’ve never been in a parish that reminded/informed people that “double dipping” was not allowed.

It used to be against forum rules to open a thread of duplicate topic.
