The individual vs the group

It seems to me the majority of the political and social issues are centered aroundthe needs/wants of the individual vs the group (society in general). What’s the proper balance between the individual and the group?

Examples range from tax policy to the “pelvic issues” to euthanasia to and more.

My understanding of Catholic teaching is that the group should serve the individual.

The good of the group should not come at the expense of the individuals rights.

Specific to taxes I’m not opposed to them, even for welfare. I think Universal Destination of goods permits this. However the individual has a right to personal property. To me this means that taxes should be as low as possible and the money spent prudently.
