How can we truly say that contraception is a mortal sin for those using it when most catholics in the west have been told for decades by priests, sisters, and even bishops that contraception is a “personal decision?”
Not any more!

At a Mass I attended last year in Arizona, during the announcements at the end of Mass, two lay spokesman came up and gave a short speech to introcuce the process of Natural Family Planning. They also announced the time for a NFP class that was going to be held for Catholic Parishioners who wished to attend.

But the fact that they actually took 5 minutes to explain NFP before announcing the class time showed us that the Church is not keeping quiet. They’re no longer shying-away from the issue by simply calling it a “personal decision”.

The Churches position on contraception is crystal clear, and we’re not afraid to talk about it anymore.

That really depends on which diocese/parish you live in. The situation you described is still very rare in american catholicism.
