"The Jesus Seminar" group - anti-Catholic?

My dh was given a book called The Five Gospels put out by The Jesus Seminar. He is a convert, and I know he isn’t having doubts, but I said I’d do some research on this for him.

I seem to recall reading something about The Jesus Seminar on a Catholic web site or in a magazine that contained a warning about this group.

They’re not explicitly anti-Catholic in the way a fundamentalist might be, but they’re naturalists (i.e. they reject the idea that Jesus performed any supernatural miracles).

Thus, they dissect parts of the Bible that they find unreliable; they think the (Gnostic) Gospel of Thomas is more reliable than the Gospel of John for this reason.

The Jesus Seminar people have basically gutted the NT of anything that smacks of the supernatural; looking for a natural explanation for any miracle or totally discounting it. I seem to recall that they do a hash job on many of the things quoted as being said by Jesus.

In my opinion DH would not learn anything of value and might more profitably spend his time on something else. I am not saying this out of fear that it might cause him to lose his Faith so much as thinking there are so many other ways of spending his time.

The Jesus Seminar is a very liberal “Christian” body and is actually anti-Christian in that they strip Jesus of His Divinity and the Gospels of their accuracy (eg all miracles are made up to simply teach a moral truth). Further they deny things like the Resurrection. They are dangerous and heretical, and there is a special place in hell prepared for them.

Their “fame” comes from the fact the media loves to bash Christianity and the fact these men are “scholars” (though there are many solid Christian scholars out there who defend Christ but are ignored or treated as ignorant/unsophisticated).
