What think y’all?

đź‘Ť ?

:nope: ?

SU got a sample copy in the mail. I was a little leery at first, but she was impressed. Also, I noted Alice von Hildebrand’s name among the contributors. Other opinions?

We recieved a free copy and really enjoyed it. But, I’d like some more information . The name makes my think of SSPX.

I have found it to be questionable at best.

I cancelled my subscription and then they charged my credit card for a renewal without my approval. Got that fixed but they keep sending me the Magizine.

I got this free offer too. It has Bishop Sheen and Alice Von Hildebrand on the back but I was leery of it too. I don’t think I will become a subscriber unless many people highly recommend it. ByzCath doesn’t give a glowing report. 🙂

I read an issue a while ago and received the same recent mailing soliciting new subscribers.

I may be mistaken, but I think the magazine treats the Latin Mass objectively. The focus is on the Mass itself and the associated Culture. Therefore, it may contain contributions from numerous sources, all of which promote these things yet some of which may be doing so in schism. If I am correct, I would liken it to the society Una Voce. Here, you will find members both in and out of Communion with Rome.

I have read their samples. Some of their articles are very good, but in many they walk close to the edge. And they don’t seem to know where the edge is.

I received a sample issue too, and though some of the articles were fine and by respected authors, that doesn’t necessarily mean those authors are on board with the magazine on all fronts. I ended up tossing it in the trash, as it smelled of radical traditionalism, and those people are tiresomely more Catholic than the pope. My very orthodox priest agreed with my assessment.

My problem with this magazine is its over-zealous support of homeschooling, as though one must home school in order to be part of the TLM movement.

I realize home schooling works for some, but it is not for everyone. Making it such a central issue to the magazine is as bizarre as if they were to hard-sell certain businesses owned by TLM advocates. "You must drive a Chrysler because dealer Joe Schmoe is a traditionalist!"EDIT “Truly orthodox priests drive Chryslers” Etc. Etc.

Marian Carroll:
I would agree with Fr. Serpa’s opinion. I have been a subscriber since The Latin Mass magazine’s inception almost 10 years ago. Although it has changed editorial hands a few years ago, the articles are of high quality and are written by good, orthodox writers.

One thing I miss in the current format is that you don’t read much on the “traditionalist” groups and their progress anymore. For example, it used to be that each article had an “update” on how the Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) was coming along, or would give an in-depth study on the traditional Benedictine monks in France.

I agree with Fr. Serpa, also. I don’t subscribe but have read a few issues. They recently ran a couple articles critical of JPII’s handling of the interreligious meetings at Assisi. It was not done in a disrespectful way, in my opinion. I wouldn’t call it over the edge. The folks at the magazine are tied to this website, which I’ve seen recommended on Catholic Exchange.

Of course, some might consider the very title of the magazine “over the edge.” Not me.

God bless,
jb

I’ve subscribed to it for a few years now and would agree with Fr. Serpa’s assessment that it is in good standing with the Church and fine to read. Personally, I consider it one of the best Catholic magazines out there. However, just go to this link:

http://www.latinmassmagazine.com/

and you can read some sample articles they have posted.

I recommend it as well. I’ve read a few articles from it, both online and from some recent hard-copy issues. I’ll be purchasing my first subscription to it in a couple of weeks.

Latin Mass Magazine has some articles in it that are disloyal to the Church. Please see this link:

sspx.agenda.tripod.com/id38.html. This article is about how Latin Mass Magazine has misrepresented the FSSP(Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter).

Also, on the Internet site for Latin Mass Magazine, they have some articles listed. Some of the people that they have had write for them include Michael Davies, and Dr Thomas Droleskey, who employs at least two suspended Priests.(Note: These Priests were NOT suspended for abuse.)

I urge anyone considering, or already having, a subscription to Latin Mass Magazine to rethink what they are doing.

I sent a Private Message to Father Serpa, informing him about the disloyalty of Latin Mass Magazine. So far, I have not heard anything back from him yet.

Forgive me for asking, but…what is wrong with Michael Davies?(may he rest in Peace)
God Bless

As far as I know, he never stopped admiring Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. To this day, the publishing house of the SSPX still publishes some of Mr Davies’ books.

Please see the following:

This should tell you something about Michael Davies.

Please note that I do not presume to judge the state of his soul. I am objecting to him based on his outward actions.

Anyone who writes a lot, is bound to rub someone the “wrong” way.

Davies tends to have an effect on the more liberal or modern Catholics…

His “Liturgical Timebombs” is an effective, concise work - 100 pages - that lays it on the line with regards to the NO and how it has been abused since VatII. It is not a Rad-Trad work. It is perhaps best defined as a documentary on what has happened in the 40 years of wandering in the desert of ambiguity since VatII

The Latin Mass has wonderful articles (a bit deep sometimes) by sound orthodox priests and laity. Personally, I don’t fear hearing the facts.

Supporters of the Society of St Pius X frequently distribute leaflets containing highly selective or tendentious quotations. One, for example, claims that the Society is neither schismatic nor excommunicated. Generally the line of argument is that since Archbishop Lefebvre was not schismatic, he was not excommunicated, and a fortiori neither were any of his followers. The leaflet quotes Cardinal Castillo Lara to the effect that consecrating a bishop without the Pope’s permission is not in itself a schismatic act. It continues that merely to consecrate bishops, without intending to set up an alternative hierarchy in the jurisdictional sense is not an act of schism. Several canonists are quoted as endorsing these views, Count Neri Capponi, an advocate accredited to the Signatura, Professor Geringer of Munich University, Fr. Patrick Valdini, Professor of Canon Law at the Catholic Institute of Paris, and Fr. Gerald Murray who presented his thesis on the subject at the Gregorian University.

Reference is also made to the decision of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, dated 28th June 1993, that the excommunication imposed on followers of Archbishop Lefebvre on 1st May 1991 by Bishop Ferraio of Hawaii was invalid since there had been no schismatic acts in the strict sense. One cannot be certain as to the accuracy of such quotations, at least in terms of completeness. For example the decree mentioned added a rider that there were other grounds on which the Bishop could take action.

I am not aware whether Fr.Murray’s thesis has been published, but it would appear that the Council had been sent not the thesis but two articles published in the Fall issue of “Latin Mass” magazine…

well he departed this life, in full communion with Rome. And as far as admiring Archbishop lefebvre. well there are worse things , i too Admire certain things about Abp. lefebvre. Even though I am not nor Have i ever been A member of the SSPX.

Speaking of worse things what about “Father” Matthew Fox, who disseminated His errors for years, while in full communion with Rome. His book, On becoming A Musical Mystical Bear. Was written while He was A Dominican!
