Crocus, did you watch the link posted above? If you do, you will see how it works. The wording is slightly different, but it is quite thought provoking, not just repeated the way we sometimes do without thinking much about the words.
The was a priest on EWTN, probably 20 years ago, that suggested the same thing as your priest. Say each word, one at a time, stopping to think about what each word means and why that word was chosen. When I have done it, I have usually not made it the whole way through either. Your mind goes off on a tangent, thinking about a word and its meaning and sometimes it would be quite an enlightening moment.
