I work with a Baptist who does not believe that the Lord’s Prayer is a prayer. He told me that it is a list of instructions regarding HOW we should pray not a prayer in and of itself.
When Jesus said that this is HOW we should pray did he mean we should actually pray using these words or are these words guidlines for praying??

Did you ask them what difference does it make? We pray in other ways and use other prayers that follow that formula as well. What problem does he have with using the “instructions” as a prayer itself?

My response would be — so what? 🤷

Of course the Lord’s Prayer is a set of instructions for praying - and much more besides. There have been some wonderful analyses and reflections written on the truths that are contained within it.

Gotta say, it stands to reason the best way of following those ‘instructions’ is to actually pray the prayer as written, no?

Here is what the CCC offers at the beginning of the section on the Lord’s Prayer:
"THE SUMMARY OF THE WHOLE GOSPEL"
2761
The Lord’s Prayer "is truly the summary of the whole gospel."7 "Since the Lord . . . after handing over the practice of prayer, said elsewhere, ‘Ask and you will receive,’ and since everyone has petitions which are peculiar to his circumstances, the regular and appropriate prayer the Lord’s Prayer] is said first, as the foundation of further desires."8
Sounds pretty convincing to me…yes I do believe that when the late Pope John Paul II, The Great, signed off on this section of the CCC…he was demonstrating that he was a “Pope”…who really knew how to…“Pope”…as many Protestant/Evangelical leaders/pastors use to say about him…with great fondness, admiration and warmth!

This has got to be one of the dumbest anti-catholic arguments ever made. What they don’t even realize is they are going against their OWN traditions! Search back into Protestant church liturgies (including Baptist) over the past 500 years, they ALL included a puplic recitation of the Lord’s Prayer.
The first Baptist church I pastored still recited the Lord’s Prayer every Sunday.
Fundamentalists/evangelicals got rid of it I guess because it takes time away from the preacher or the worship band.

My uncle, who is a Pentecostal minister doesn’t believe in it as well. They believe that it has to be your own words and from your heart to constitute as a prayer. I pray every day for him to come back to the Mother Church.

If you read the words of the Out Father, it is clearly a prayer; Jesus said when you pray, pray like this: Our Father …
If the person chooses not to recognize the truth, you can’t change that, don’t waste your time.
