Today at Mass our Priest had a reques of us:

Teach your children of the evils of alcohol.

This past week, our community lost two high school kids, who were involved in a fatal accident. The report indicated alcohol and speed were the cause. Father Chuck told us that the two hardest days of his life, were telling a parents that their child wasn’t coming home. He describe the feeling of walking up to the door of that parents house. And the look on the parents face, when they opened the door to see their Priest and a State Trooper standing there. I was moved and touched and immediately wanted to share this with everyone.

Please pray for the families of the two kids. Please pray for the parish and community.

Most important, please talk to your children about the dangers of alcohol. We need to teach our kids of the dangers, before it is too late.

Thank you

I do not have children, and will never be able to have children. But I am sober 22 years in Alcoholics Anonymous, and do what I can to help newcomers get sober and stay sober. It is an uphill battle, and we have many failures.

I will most certainly pray for these families. How heartbreaking.

I’m almost hesitant to continue, because I do not want to hijack this thread nor disrespect the sad circumstances from which it originated, but…I am going to do my part to teach my children about the dangers and the benefits of alcohol.

When we only preach the dangers & evils & leave out the benefits & enjoyment, kids don’t believe us. They see their family members responsibly consuming alcohol & think, “But I thought it was evil?”

Hope this only gave pause & didn’t offend anyone.:o

I think I understand your point, Stephanie. I try to do this too, with my kids. I want them to understand that abusing alchohol is wrong morally, and it is dangerous. On the other hand, it is not a “sin” to have a glass of wine or a beer now and then, as long as you don’t drink and drive or drink too much, etc.

That’s such a fine line though, isn’t it? Because while one person may be able to drink occasionally and never abuse alcohol, another may have the dispositon or make up or whatever that as soon as they start drinking, they are on the path to becoming an alcoholic. I have alcoholics in my family so probably I’m overly sensitive to this but I guess I would prefer that my children never ever drink just to be on the safe side - not because I think it’s a sin, but because I think it’s totally unnecessary. Not sure how I get them to never ever drink though… ?

Prayers for the families who lost children. That is just so tragic.

I agree that it is a very fine line. Alcohoism runs on both sides of my husband’s family, and we try very hard to talk to our kids about alcohol and its potentially deadly effects. My kids have seen first hand what alcoholism has done to some of their family members, and they have very strong feelings about alchohol use.

You have not offended and I think this is a wonderful point. I also agree that there is a fine line. We should teach our children it is not a sin, but it has it’s evils.

Thank you for eveyone who has read this post and said a quick prayer. Also, thank you to everyone who has taken the time or will take the time to talk to thier kids.

Thank you again!
