Hi all,

What do you think when publishers, writers, and people in general refer to books of facts as their “bible” ?

I was just searching ebay for cookbooks and came across one called “the Low-Carb bible”

The word bible is in lowercase, but do you think its wrong for people to call anything other than Sacred Scripture a “bible”?

Or does the word genuinely mean “a collection of books” ??

Thanks

I think what it may mean is that because the Bible is also the “Word”, the unspoken thing when something is labled The Lo Carb Bible, it’s another way of saying /meaning the ultimate, or in todays lingo, the “word”
I wouldn’t be offended.
Webster’s defines the word as :4 : a publication that is preeminent especially in authoritativeness or wide readership <the fisherman’s bible> <the bible of the entertainment industry>

Don’t sweat the Small Stuff

I have a book called The Complete HTML which I refer to as my HTML Bible.

By that I mean my definitive Source.

Bible literally simply means ‘book’ - from the Greek (?) word biblios.

But the word has indeed come to have the secondary meaning of an especially comprehensive or definitive source about a subject.

I think it’s a complement to our Holy Scripture that people recognise its authoritativeness 👍

The Bible’s title isn’t merely “The Bible,” it’s “The Holy Bible” or “Holy Book.” No other religion’s scriptures are referred to with that title. There’s the Quran, the Sanskrit, the Book of Mormon, and other such writings, but only the Hebrew/Christian scriptures are referred to as “THE HOLY BIBLE,” because it is. 😉
