Dearest servants of the Lord of Lords Jesus Christ,
A hop, skip and a jump from the famous Piazza Navona in Rome is the Tower of the Monkey (Torre della Scimmia). It is an ancient medieval tower - like many in the Eternal City - and it is capped by a statue of the Mother and Child (since it is on top of the Tower of the Monkey, the statue is called Madonna della Scimmia: “the Madonna of the Monkey”).
The tower received its name from a legend (which is recounted by Nathaniel Hawthorne) that the owner of the house capped by the tower had an infant son, but he also kept a monkey. One day, the monkey took the child and climbed up the tower, endangering the child’s life. When the father prayed to Our Lady, the monkey returned down the tower and replaced the child in the crib, and in gratitude the father erected the statue above the tower and ordered that a lamp be lit every night. The lamp has become electric, but it still shines every night as a benevolent symbol of the grace of Christ and the power He deigns to give to his Blessed Mother.
