Hey folks, I’ve got a fun question for you.

I was poking a bit of fun and suggesting that I buy a small island somewhere and create a small, Catholic nation. On hitting ebay, I found several that were for sale, but all of them are owned by another nation. Then I remembered! Sealand! (sealandgov.org/).

So here’s the question:
Let’s say that His Grace, King Roy of Sealand, converted and became Catholic. Or, to be even more broad, let’s say that I either discovered or built an island of significant size and declared myself an independent Catholic realm. Could I be crowned a Catholic King? How were these things done? How are they done now, as (I believe) is the case in Spain?

And yes, this is just for fun. I have no plan on building an island, or buying up sealand…or DO I?

Yes, I am sure you could be crowned a Catholic king. You would need to have your land covered by ecclesiatical authority though (i.e. be part of a diocese or something, so that a bishop or papal legate could do the coronation.

It might be more fitting, however, if you took a lesser title like prince.

A group of them might, however, as it seems that is how Hutt River, in the western part of Australia, came about. Of course, the Aussies do not recognize them!

It would be possible to escape the existing sovereignties only by somehow raising square mileage from the ocean floor. That is how Sealand came about; it was originally a WW2 gunnery platform, outside the then territorial limit of England, and when it became abandoned post war, a group of people took it over and declared independence.

(Even then, if your land-raising project sat within 12 miles of any shoreline, or on the shipping lanes, the existing societies would stop you).

Obviously building or raising land surface in this way is beyond one person’s abilities. And once there are a lot of people, how do you know they will want YOU as king ?

I don’t remember them having a King. I don’t know if people actually live there. It’s really more of sea fort. But for a small fee (well, at least $100 which isn’t too small), you can be a Lord, Lady or have some other title of Sealand.

They have a royal family, lead by His Majesty, King Roy who is married to Princess Joan of Sealand. There are currently just over 50 people in residence including the family, security and their workers. I believe they run a datahaven, and are working on an online casino to build revenue. There’s a plan to make it a place to test green technologies.

And no man is an island. Islands are islands. Men are men.
