One hundred and seventeen years ago, a little-known event took place on July 16 – the first Sisters of St. Martha arrived in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. “The Marthas,” as they’re called, arose from a silent retreat when 15 Sisters of Charity of Halifax rose when inspired to begin a new community.

Thank you very much, Cloisters. My paternal grandfather emigrated from Antigonish, NS to Boston in the early 1900’s. Some of the relatives still live on the ancestral homestead farm. It is good to learn about the Marthas as well as Antigonish.
