Here’s an interesting link to information on a document (Didascalia) from about 250 A.D. describing celebration of Mass, which way to face, decorum of the people, etc. A quick read and pretty interesting.
 
Thanks for posting this. The best part was the fact that there were bouncers at the door 🙂

How much I’d love to visit an old church! It would help put things into perspective.
 
As yes, the Didascalia. It’s nice to see it, especially on an Archdiocesan website. In particular, I was happy to see the “facing east” part which should raise a few eyebrows. 😉
