Does anyone else find it strange and amazing that there are so many different languages? It doesn’t really make sense, because here we are, speaking fluent English, and if we had grown up in, for example, Russia, we would speak fluent Russian instead! :hypno: Yet the fact is…we do not…but some people do, and they learned when they were infants, because babies just-learn to talk- by listening to people around them… And some of them learn Russian, some learn English, & all the other languages…But we all exist…and again, here we speak fluent english and don’t have to think about it, and we don’t understand Russian at all, but also without thinking about it…It’s crazy. Sometimes I think about it for hours on end, & it makes me feel…strange…But God allows all these languages, and he understands them all, & he makes it so that everyone learns their own language…and…it’s crazy…Yes, I know about the tower of Babel, but still…Does anyone understand??

Sorry, duplicate thread. I do not know how to delete it.

I am fascinated by language. Since I started learning Latin, my appreciation of English has increased immensely. I am starting to learn how languages work and operate. Through the study of Latin, I have come to see how we automatically use highly complex grammar. It amazes me.

Is it possible that the entire world once spoke a common language? I ask this because I know that the Romance languages all derive from the Proto-Indo-European language. Perhaps the Proto-Indo-European language descends from an even earlier language? I would love to find out if there are any theories concerning an original common language known to mankind? Sort of like the language spoken by the world before the fall of the Tower of Babel.

Well, there is something called the Japhetic theory.According to this, the Japhetic languages were once prevalent across Europe. (Japhetic languages meant Kartvelien languages were related to Semitic languages, thus creating one language…?) But nobody believes this theory anymore. It was created by Nikolay Marr in the early 20th century.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japhetic_theory_(linguistics

There are theories, linked also to genetics about one language- it is the ultimate logic, but how complex, or deined it was is another sotry, and how quickly it remained, or replaced itself, or died out etc.
