Tepeyac

I know that they broadcast their offices (Liturgy of the Hours) on French T.V. There are a few clips of them on youtube as well:

Vespers (with Mass?)

There are links to a some more clips on that page. Also, a clip of their Morning Prayer:

Lauds

Does anybody have any personal experience with this group? They have a website (turn your machine’s volume down, it plays music): *Fraternités *Monastiques de Jérusalem but it’s in French. I’ve been interested in them since I read an article about them somewhere online. I would love it if they were invited to the U.S. Has anyone else heard about them?

Yes, Tepeyac. They originated in Paris. Their founder is Pierre Marie Delphieux. Their mission is to be monks and nuns in the city, and therefore they work at part time jobs during the day. They are rather like the double monasteries of the Middle Ages, in that there seems to be a pattern of dual foundations wherever they go. Where the monks found a monastery, the nuns do likewise. Next time I visit France, I would like to experience their liturgy, either vespers or mass, as I am told that all of their worship is patterned on Byzantine liturgy. They are not, to my knowledge, in the U.S.A., but they have founded in Montreal. Knowledge of some French would be helpful if you plan to visit them.

It does not appear, from the youtubes clip. That their worship is patterned on the Byzantines. It is as latin as can be in worship. Not that there is anythign wrong with that of course : p . It does appear to be a very reverent celebration of the Ordinary form of the Roman Mass though.

Nothing I saw looked Byzantine in their worship at all.

I attend mass with them in Montreal at least every Sunday. It is one of the most beautiful liturgies I have experienced! It is definitely Roman, but they do have little tastes of Eastern esthetics: trisagion, icons, music, epiclesis, etc. And ALL of their liturgy is sung! It truly is a foretaste of the divine liturgy as far as I’m concerned. If any of you do visit them, make sure you talk with them as well. They are very welcoming and very wise. The Montreal communities both (monks and nuns) have some American vocations too. Worth a visit! And if you’re discerning a religious vocation, worth a look!

Their only monastic community in North America is in Montreal, Quebec. I’ve been to their liturgies and they are so beautiful. I know a sister in the order and they are amazing people. What is also really cool about their order is that they are located in a major hub of Montreal called the Plateau. It is in a community that is rich in culture and it’s also located right beside Mont Royal metro which makes it even more accessible to visitors and the local people. Parking can be a royal pain so most people rely upon the public transit system in particular the metro which comes every 3 to 10 minutes depending on the time of day and if it’s a weekend.

If someone is looking for an order, they are a good choice because they are very active in the Plateau community (The Plateau is a section of Montreal,) they are very contemplative plus they also hold part time jobs as well. Don’t also let the french aspect detour you either. Montreal has lots of french courses, french isn’t that difficult to pick up especially considering up there are tons of opportunities to practice it.

Here is the link to their Montreal branch. They are also very active in Europe.

Below are a couple of links to their youtube photo collage. The people you see are the actual brothers and sisters who are part of the community. They are such sweet and caring people. I’m really happy that they chose Montreal as their first entry to North America.

What a beautiful community! And it’s nice to know that they have a house now in Montreal!

Judging from the outside of the building, it almost looks like a former convent. It has that distinctive French-Canadian ‘look’.

It’s also good to see young religious in such a secular environment as Montreal (and the Province of Quebec for that matter) has become.,

I went to Mass very often at the Church of Saint Gervais, in the heart of Paris, precisely because it was so beautiful. The order grew tremendously, there are many young nuns and monks there now. Some of you mentioned the Byzantine rite: in fact, like another participant said, their Mass is Latin, but some of their singing is inspired by the Byzantine/Orthodox music and contents. I always felt that this was a perfect pre-schismatic place to be, where the Church is one.
If any of you are in Paris on New Year’s Eve, and aren’t crazy about the party scene, Saint-Gervais has an all-night celebration at the church, which is wonderful! They also have a store at the back of the church, in a beautiful street that you will not want to miss!
