Actually, there is a canonical and theological difference between monk, friar, hermit and brother.

Monks and friars make solemn vows and belong to an order. Brothers make simple vows and belong to a congregation, not an order. Hermits may make either simple or solemn vows depending on what kind of hermits they are. Also, some hermits belong to an order such as the Carthusians and Camaldolece. Other monks are diocesan and do not belong to a community. These make simple vows and owe their obedience to the local bishop.

Fraternally,

JR 🙂
Would this mean that the terms “hermit” and “monk” cannot coincide? It seems to happen with the Carthusians, and in the research that I have done while considering their order they refer to the men in their order as monks.
