Hi.

Can anyone please explain to me what “The Moral Argument” is all about?

Hi.

Can anyone please explain to me what “The Moral Argument” is all about?
Are you referring to the “Existence of God”? Do you believe in His existence? What is He to your life? Is He a Sunday presence or an everyday experience?

As was stated it’s basically.

Without God there is ZERO reason to act any different than animals. Rape murder and pillage. Every man for himself and whatever will help you survive and procreate is what you do.

Some then argue that our morals are just social constructs we have decided to implement to help us as a species survive.

Ok,

But then each societies morals are relative to them. Classic example is just because we believe genocide is wrong in the US gives us no authority to say its wrong in Africa or Nazi Germany because that society determined it to be ok.

So there would be no moral absolutes. Some atheists accept that, but most must acknowledge that there are moral absolutes and then ponder why that is.

I agree that certain things are really wrong no matter what society thinks.

When slavery was considered moral in Southern United States it was still wrong even if everybody disagreed. It was wrong to discriminate Jews even if everybody in Nazi Germany thought it was good.

But why does God have to be the explanation of objective morality?

What else could be?

But Reason only works within societal norms.

Hitler and Nazi Germany reasoned that their country would be better off without minorities.

Survival of the fittest has no room for charity and caring for those that are less fortunate.

If there are objective moral truths (like raping is always wrong) then there has to be a transcendent cause for such a truth.

Otherwise the society who is having a population crash may reason that raping is ok so they don’t go extinct.

Reason can only apply to accepted postulates. On what basis do you accept your postulates? And then what is the basis for the acceptance of that basis? As you can see, the acceptance of a “good” and “bad” implies an infinite number of levels of acceptances of good vs bad judgements.
Logically we can never reach an ultimate basis. Thus we have no idea what is the basis of our beliefs.

That is, if we do not acknowledge the basis is from God, and the source of the acceptance an inner feeling within ourselves that it is the right thing to do.

A thinking athiest acknowledges the unreality of morality in his system.

“The dream of reason begets nightmares.”
