I was really amazed to find out that the Most Reverend Archbishop Cyril Vasil’ is a Jesuit. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1990 and professed his solemn vows in 2001. Currently he is the secretary for the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and Titular Archbishop of Ptolemais in Libya. Amazing! 🙂

Is it rare for Eastern Catholics to enter Latin Religous Orders? I know Br. David (aka ByzCath) belongs to the Carmelites. But how rare are they?

It is very common.

If I am not mistaken many Ruthenian bishops in the USA have come from the Franciscans. These would be cradle Ruthenians who joined the Franciscans, not generally cradle Latin Catholics.

Carmelites are a big deal in the Syro-Malabar church, where they were instrumental in restoring Papal authority at one time.

The Basilian OSBM religious order was reorganized by the Jesuits into an active society, so it is also essentially a western type order.

There are many religious orders that are either exclusively Eastern Catholics, or traditionally Latin but has many Eastern members among them. The Redemptorists are such, that is why they have the most venerated Byzantine icon in the Roman Catholic Church, The Theotokos of the Passion. Or more commonly known in RC circles as the Mother of Perpetual Help.

I’ve also met SJ UGCC priests.

Also there is a Ukrainian Catholic order called the OSBM or Basilian Fathers or Order of St. Basil the Great.
