Some people in my parish have said we should not have candles burning in front of the statue of the Virgin during holy Mass, they asked me what I thought and I said I did not think Jesus would mind if we honor His mother.
Can we ever love Mary too much? has not God always loved her more than we ever can?

In my Byzantine Catholic parish we always honor the Mother of God with a burning candle. Also, we have specific prayers to Mary during the services and our recessional hymn is always in honor to Mary.

I think someone is worried about how much the candles cost. Or perhaps they are overscrupulous. Either way, that doies not seem correct to me.

Candles are to be burned from the they are lit to the time they go out. I think there may be some exceptions, such as during the Triduum, but certainly not during Mass at any other time of the year.

of course God would not mind if we honored his mother! We can never love
Mary to much, she is the mother of the Lord, and it is perfectly fine for us to
honor her as such.

One thing people should realize, is that Catholic’s do not worship Mary,
we respect and honor her. In no way do we worship her. It is perfectly okay
to pray for her intercession, and to respect her and honor her, but we do not
worship her.
