Hi,
I have a question for the protestants hanging around this place: Do you also sometimes speak of the “Mystical body of Christ” when referring to the Church (which you can understand as all Christians of any denomination combined, for the sake of the argument here)?
There are two verses that have been coming back to me over and over again recently: “I am the vine, you are the branches” and “he is the head, we are the members” (don’t ask for numbers, I don’t memorize them as a Catholic
Somehow it seems to me that the idea of the “Mystical body” explains (at least in part) the Catholic point of view on some topics, for example:

Somehow it seems to me that the idea of the “Mystical body” explains (at least in part) the Catholic point of view on some topics, for example:
- the fact that we can offer up our “sufferings” (everything that annoys us on any given day) for the conversion of sinners. If through Christ death for us and our baptism, we become part of the “Mystical body”, then it is not really our suffering as human beings that is any good, but our suffering as members of the Church, and therefore as parts of Christ’s body.
- calling Mary our “Mother”: Since Christ “earthly”, temporal body can’t really be separated from his “Mystical body”, when Mary gave birth to Jesus, she also in a way gave birth to us.
Does this make any sense? I’d like to hear also from other Catholics if they think it does.
