The NABRE is growing on me

Yes, it is. It could be simply the aesthetics of the black and red format of this HaperOne edition or maybe I’m finally really free of all the hidden roots of sola scriptura and can see the bible clearly now in the context of Tradition. I’m not ready to give up my RSV-2CE Ignatius New Testament yet, but I’m definitely not anti-nabre anymore.
 
I think people exaggerate the deficiencies of the NABRE. The notes are bad, but the translation is pretty alright I think.
 
Oxford has a large print edition of the NABRE which has the notes at the end of each book for those who don’t care to see them!
 
The Revised Edition of the New American Bible is actually quite good, especially the newly-revised Old Testament. There are still renderings I don’t quite like (“God-Hero”) but so does the Revised Standard Version (my personal favorite) and the Douay. Overall though I think it does a good job.

I still would not trust the notes though. If there were a reader’s edition of the NABRE, I would put it up there with my RSV.
 
When I ignore the notes, I quite like my St. Joseph’s edition of the NAB–but the translation is still flat, the obvious product of unispired commitee

The NABRE OT and Pslams are a considerable improvement over the previous edition.

Also, the HarperOne edition is quite beautiful in its page layout and design. A reader on my blog liked it so much he even had it rebound in premium leather:

I like the NABRE. I have no issue with the translation. I’m also not even close to knowing anything about the original languages. So, I have to trust translations. My Bishops tell me this one is ok. Good enough for me. As far as the notes, I use the ones that help, ignore the ones that don’t. In other words when the notes mention context or cross reference, cool. However, when they move into textual criticism (sp.?)…I leave it alone.
 
Since the USCCB has already mandated that the New Grail Psalms be used in the liturgy–and has already set in motion a plan to revise the New Testament–the notes and a light edit of the Old Testament–why not use the New Grail Psalms in upcoming printings of the NABRE?

They’ve already said that they’ll be there YEARS from now when the final NAB is produced–why not print them with the NAB now?!

Probably, because they own the rights to the NABRE Psalms and not those of the Revised Grail Psalms. It would make more sense to use the new NABRE Psalms in the future Lectionary instead of the Revised Grail Psalms, but maybe they are already locked into the current agreement. 🤷
 
Are you telling me that the USCCB would not have enough influence to swing a deal with the New Grail Psalms in a NAB bible?! That’s ludicrous!

The REAL reason it doesn’t happen is the same reason that the NAB has been messed up since 1970–the great NAB attrition translation war.

The modernists with their no good clunky translations and borderline notes will fight tooth and nail until they are totally vanquished to keep the NAB messed up.

I don’t think that most of the American bishops want it messed up–I DO think that most of the American bishops who know it’s a little messed up are too nice to FIGHT them!

Look at all the FIGHTING that had to be done to improve the liturgy–most of the changes were a no brainer and how many years did it take?

The New Grail Psalms was made to be the final Psalter solution–not having it in the NAB doesn’t make sense!

Sometimes I wish the Pope himself would change every single thing that he thought was messed up about the NAB–footnotes included–and say–there’s your new NAB–if you think other changes should be made or if you think that mine are in error get back with me in 5 years?

I bet the NAB would be a great bible then!
