I personally just think the history behind the name itself is pretty interesting. So in Hebrew Jesus’ name is Yeshua which in English is translated to Jesus or Joshua. And many other languages have their translations of His name that they use in everyday life. I just find it really fascinating how many different versions of the name is out there that all refer to our savior.

I also do recognize that this is a topic many have a strong position on with some saying calling him anything other than Yeshua is blasphemy. I don’t really agree with that as Jesus is just the English translation and it still refers to our Lord and on top of that millions have been saved in the name of Jesus Christ. But what do you think about this?

On occasion this forum has had visitors with peculiar obsessions about discovering the “true” name of Jesus, believing that any invocation without Yeshua/Yehoshua/etc. is ineffective.

I surmise that it’s all connected to some wackadoo fringe movement as any putative controversy about the personal name of Jesus has never featured as a legitimate theological topic in apostolic Christianity.

Since the Bible already translates Yeshua into Iesous it is absurd to say that to do so is blasphemy

There’s an article on Catholic.com by Michelle Arnold that dives into why Jesus’ name is not Emmanuel. A basic summary is that “name” wasn’t referring to his actual name but moreso what he would be called. She compared it to Babe Ruth being called the sultan of swat. And that Emmanuel translates to “God is with us”
Emmanuel, “God is with us,” also calls to mind the last verse in Matthew (28:20): “Behold, I [Jesus] am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Not really in Catholicism. We typically recognize that the Holy Name of Jesus may be spelled or pronounced differently in different languages. “Yeshua” itself doesn’t sound much like the “Gee-zuz” pronunciation we use in English, nor the “Jay-zoo”, “Hay-zooss”, or “Zoosh” pronunciation it gets in other languages.

Plus we recognize that Jesus has lots of other titles that it’s okay to use, such as Lord, Christ, the Son of God, Emmanuel, the Lamb of God, Logos/ the Word, the Sacred Heart, etc. Although if we were to do a formal prayer in Jesus’ name, we’d use the name of Jesus.

I’m SyroMalabar Catholic, and since our native language has had connections to Syriac, we refer to Jesus as Yeshu or Eesho (Eesho Mishiha), which is heavily influenced of East Syriac.
