is a rosary actually needed?granted it may be difficult to keep track with out it, but as long as you know the prayers ,is it realy needed, could you like pray a rosary with out the physical item?

Nope - as people round here point out, God gave us ten fingers for a reason. When I’m walking I like to listen to audio rosary or chaplet of Divine Mercy, because you don’t need the beads to keep track of everything with it.

You don’t really need it.
I think the Rosary is beautiful though. I have several.
A good one for travel is a metal finger rosary. You just put it on one of your fingers and twirl it as you say the prayers.
They’re small though and easy to lose.

Or you can buy a couple of the ultra-cheap plastic rosaries for now (always a spare if you’re the type of person who tends to lose 'em) and maybe ask for a nicer one as a birthday or Christmas present.

The cheap plastic ones are also stronger than the expensive ones. I accidentally left one on the floor and caught one in the vacuum cleaner. It burned up the belt on my vacuum, but there wasn’t a scratched bead or frayed string on it. I guess someone was telling me I needed to pray the Rosary…

Oh much stronger! I had one that I suspect went through my washing machine in my jeans pocket :o

Mind you I do have a well-used souvenir Rosary of a visit here by JP2 that’s over 20 years old and still going strong, but it’d never survive something like that.
