Anyone ever feel they need to feel needed, and if the feeling of being needed goes away, they become depressed/unhappy?

IE my wife went through a rough spot, and I took up the slack and did all I could to try and make her happy and stress free again…now that she is, I don’t really feel needed anymore and am sad.

I am also in IT as a career, and at the job I’m at, I have everything running great. I feel as if I am no longer needed, and they could just let me go now that I’ve worked all the kinks out, and have someone part time go in there and work.

Is it a form of pride to feel this way?

[not from an expert] Of course your wife still needs you. She loves you and you are her comforter. Do you think she would be still happy if you are not there for her anymore? For her to continue being happy, you need to be happy knowing that she is happy. Let her know that! 🙂 and let her know you are there for her at all time.

At work, I am thinking many people might have the same feeling as you do, but instead of feeling not needed, you can always give thanks to God for giving you the job and ask Him to help you trust in Him.

Furthermore, use this prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
[Easy Printing Version]
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love
.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
God bless.

We all have a need to be needed.

The definition of being needed is not only for our loved ones being in trouble.
You are always needed by your wife and your family, rain or shine.
Plus, there are many people in need outside of your family where you could lend a helping hand. Just take a look at the many volunteer opportunities in your community and in your church.
For reaching out to help, if willing, the needs never run out.

As for IT job, don’t worry, computer bugs always surface up.
There is no perfect system.
And the users always have new demands.

I know just what you mean, I’m the same way with people that are important to me and yes, I think it is my pride:( :rolleyes:

Praying for more humility (the Prayer of St. Francis is wonderful!) and realizing that if He didn’t want us to be where we are we wouldn’t be there, at least that’s what I keep trying to learn.🤷

Yes, your wife still needs you and you are needed at work too.

You might think about sharing your gift to help others through your church or charity, as there are so many people needing help . I recently joined a charity group through my church and I feel so happy and needed doing work for others. I wish I had taken the leap sooner.

Blessings
