Hi:

I have a question…

NEW AMERICAN CATHOLIC BIBLE (NAB) says:

"…controversies which supplied the background materials for the **CONFLICT stories ** of the Gospels…”

“One may ask: Was Jesus involved in these conversations? Did He answer exactly as related in the Bible? It is not certain.”

And “The book known as Acts of the Apostles in the Bible often puts words into the mouths of its characters”

“Think of the ‘holy wars’ of total destruction, fought by the Hebrews when they invaded Palestine. The search for meaning in those wars centuries later was inspired, but the conclusions which attributed all those atrocities to the command of God were imperfect and provisional.”

“the answers found were not necessary revealed by God. But some of those answers are written in the Bible by the human authors”

“Reading the Gospels, one should distinguish historical facts from theological elaboration”

“Walk into a modern library, you will find all the books neatly arranged under fiction and non-fiction. It is not that simple in the library called the Bible. How does one know whether one deals with history or some form of figurative speech?" To begin with you should always be disposed to follow the teaching authority of the Church”

So NAB admits that Bible is full of contradictions…

is that the official view of catholics concerning to Bible?

İf your answer is Yes…that is ok…I understand according to catholicism Bible is false and full of mythology and full of contradictions…

But if your answer is “NO”

Then

My question is:

Why would POPE GUARANTEE that this NAB is reliable?

PLEASE READ:

“The title page of this Bible shows that the book is “authorized by the Board of Trustees of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine” and “approved by the Administrative Committee/Board of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops” and the “United States Catholic Conference.” It is published by the Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1986. The Bible contains all the necessary Catholic certification: the Nihil Obstat, and the Imprimatur from the Archbishop of Washington. And, oh, yes! A letter from the Vatican, including the signature of the Pope, appears in the preface to guarantee the reliability of this Bible for Catholics.”

Thank You…

I would say the Bible is full of truths, but not necessarily facts. To illustrate the difference:

I could tell you: “The sun is rising.”

You could refute me with the fact: “It is not. The sun is stationary and does not move.”

But in doing so, you would be missing the *truth *expressed in spite of my technically and scientifically incorrect statement, that the sun is appearing at the eastern horizon.

Yes you are right…But I am not talking about this kind of things…

NAB says:

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that what is guaranteed as reliable is the translation of the Biblical texts. So, (again this is my understanding), the Church approves of the translations of the words of scripture from Greek and Hebrew claiming they don’t misrepresent what the Bible in the original language says. The footnotes and other commentary I don’t believe are covered by the statements you sited regarding the New American Bible.

I personally don’t like some of the footnotes and other commentaries in some Bibles I’ve read. I’m not the only one who thinks that way. I know I’ve seen at least one thread here at Catholic Answers Forums with Catholics concerned about the footnotes in one NAB study Bible.

This problem is not unique to Catholic Bible publishers. I have several Protestant Bibles, and some of them include things like reflections and study guide questions, in addition to the actual books of the Bible. If you say that you accept the NIV, King James, or another translation as reliable, that doesn’t neccesarily mean that you agree the study questions, footnotes or the added reflections some publishers include with the Biblical texts.

You may want to do a search in the forum for “NAB” or “New American Bible.” As the previous poster states, there have been tons of threads on this exact subject that will answer your question.

Hi Lucien -

Read this…

Many Catholics, including my bishop, find the NAB commentary to be too liberal. Please do not take this as the position of all Catholics. I second the recommendation that you read the document linked by Subrosa.

God bless.

Here’s Jimmy Akin’s oppinon on the footnotes in the NAB:

I don’t have the 1986 edition of the New American Bible because I don’t like the footnotes. Is this approval by the Pope given by Pope Paul VI? (A letter of approval from him appeared in the 1970 edition of the NAB, which has different footnotes.) Pope Paul VI died in 1978. If the 1986 edition cited approval by him, he was long deceased when the 1986 edition was prepared.

Why would POPE GUARANTEE that this NAB is reliable?
