Oh mystery of mysteries! The Papal college of Cardinals has discerned that the new Pope shall choose his name from a list provided by a small group of randomly selected members of the faithful. You have been chosen to submit at least one but up to three is ok, names for consideration.

Remember that there are a number of precedents.

“The first pope to change his name did so in the Sixth Century because he was named after the Roman god Mercury, and he thought it inappropriate to carry that name as pope. He chose to be called John II. After that some popes changed their names and some did not.”

"John Paul I explained his unusual choice of a double name by saying he intended to carry on the legacy of both John XXIII and Paul VI. "

“He may also choose to give an indication of the course of his papacy, as did Pius XII, who indicated that he would continue Pius XI’s work.”

So… what say you?

One name has jumped in my head:
  1. Ignatius
The other I looked up a term in a few different languages that a Pope might want to shape his pontificate around.

2.Modesto, which in Italian means humble, modest.

It depends on who the cardinals pick, duly guided by the Holy Spirit. The current front runners are usually said to be Cardinal Reinhard Marx for the liberals and Cardinal Robert Sarah for the conservatives. If it’s Marx, I think he might very well choose the name Francis II. Sarah, however (or another conservative pope) might prefer to be called Paul VII or even – just possibly – Pius XIII.

Here it goes:

Pope Peter II 😛

Pope Magnus 🧐

Pope Augustine 🤓

Pope Michael 😎

You know what the deal is about Peter II right?
That is supposed to be the name of the very last Pope, which begs the question, how will they know? 😯

Or will people just call him that because he’s such a GREAT Pope? Solid as a Rock perhaps? 😛

You know, even though Rocco means ‘rest,’ not “rock”, I think people would like it as a Papal name. . .

Or just be controversial and pick Pope Rock. Either he is the last Pope or an admirer of Rock Hudson.

How about precious materials?
Pope Diamond

Engineering materials?
Pope Teflon

Mathematical concepts?
Pope Random

But seriously, I’m backing Pope Augustine.
