There’s a commenter on my blog who will never defend anything she believes on the right to life issue.
She re-engineers the discussion so that she never has to actually back up ANYTHING she has to say.
For instance, if you say, “a fetus is a human being”, she 'll say “that’s your opinion.” You can go through all the scientific arguments, and she’ll still say “that’s your opinion.” Or “just because you think it doesn’t make it true.”
Now, of course, you can say “well just because YOU think it, doesn’t make it true.”
And she’ll say “of course, but it’s MY opinion, and I’m entitled to it.”
Etc
Do you know what I’m getting at? She never has to back up anything-- it all boils down to her opinion, and when you try to get her to defend her opinion, she doesn’t because well, it’s her opinion.
I find this very aggravating. Boiling it down to “it’s MY opinion” is very boring and it doesn’t make the discussion progress.
Has anyone successfully dealt with this? I’m not so much interesting in “winning” the debate, as getting her to say something other than “it’s MY opinion.”
I almost feel like saying “no, it’s NOT your opinion, and you’re not entitled to it, so there!” Just to get her to argue.
