The Number of the Beast

This is probably a big coincidence, but it makes me go hmmm.

It has been traditionally believed that the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation were written by the same author, John the Apostle. Everyone knows from the Book of Revelation that 666 is the number of the beast.

If you look at John:6, you will see that this is the chapter that tells about the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. It is also the chapter in which Jesus gives his “bread of life” discourse.

John 6:53-65 says the following:

Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever.” He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”

And look what it says for John 6:66

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

So, did John deliberately associate the 66th verse of the 6th chapter to those who do not believe that Christ really gives us his flesh to eat? Or, did the person who put chapters and verses in the bible deliberately do this? Or, is this one big coincidence?

Interesting theory, but the numbering of verses came hundreds of years after writing of the book; though this does not eliminate the observation. God is not limited by time.

It was done by Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury. He also helped force the king of England into signing the Magna Carta. But your point is interesting.

Yes, the verse numbers were added over 1000 years later.

But there are other coincidences with 666.

It says, “Wisdom is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six.”

The number 666 is used in the OT, I believe it is 2nd Kings. In it, 666 represents the amount of Tribute paid to the Kingdom of Israel during the time of Solomon. What is Solomon known for? His Wisdom.

The verse numbers were not added until over a thousand years later - they are not original.​

Besides, the reading of Rev. 13.18 could conceivably be “616” rather than “666” - there is good textual evidence for both readings

So - no verses to associate (the verse divisions are also late)
