This reminds me of the situation where I work, a community performance space. Our theatre is used for plays, recitals, concerts, etc, but it’s also used by the schools for their awards presentations at the end of the year.
We have a policy of not allowing photography during performances of any kind. School awards nights, OTOH, are a different kettle of fish.
The first time that our manager’s dance school performed their end of year show, parents were most upset that they couldn’t take pictures. They had the opportunity to come to dress rehearsal and take pictures then, or stage them after the performance, but during… NO WAY! One father who came with his video camera was furious when he was informed that photography was not allowed. At the end of the show he came to the manager and said, “Thank you. This is the first time I’ve actually seen a performance since she’s been in dance. I was always so focused on ‘getting the shots’ than I never watched the show.”
That’s how it is with parents and grandparents during the children’s sacraments. They’re so involved in taking pictures that they miss everything.
