Provided that it is read and interpreted correctly, and in continuity with the New Testament, then I’d agree.

However, too many (non-Catholic) Christians practice a “hermeneutic of discontinuity” approach between the Old and New Testaments, and that’s where problems arise.

Also, Berlinski is a strong supporter of intelligent design, so “your mileage may vary” if you belong to either the Young-Earth Creationist or the Theistic Evolution camps.

Last week I read how there are four rivers branching from Eden, then I thought about the shape of the cross (also called a tree) with the heart of Jesus at the center. He said that from His heart flows living waters.

The Old Testament testifies to the New Testament, IMO. People who separate the two don’t see their unity.

The Old Testament without the New Testament is like reading “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. Good stories, characters, plot, and mysteries, but Charles Dickens did not finish that book so it leaves you hanging, speculating, stuck with prophecies that never reveal, stories and metaphors that repeat but never fulfill.

When read with an understanding of the New Testament with Christ as messiah, the stories of the O.T. come alive, reveal their purpose and charge us into the world. Isaiah becomes dynamic. There is an active present and a meaning to it all.
