I recently found a Youtube channel dedicated to the Oscars!

It features clips from all the different Oscar broadcasts.

Art Carney has an Oscar for Best Actor. I had no idea. His competition was incredible, Al Pacino, Albert Finney, Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson!!

I haven’t seen the film, but it sounds very good. He plays an older man with a cat who’s evicted from his home. I wonder if it is based at all on Umberto D? That’s an Italian film of an older man who’s evicted from his home with his little dog.

Also very interesting to me, often the best actor or actress wouldn’t be at the ceremonies.

So far I’ve noticed that Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Ann Bancroft and Goldie Hawn weren’t at the ceremonies when they won.

I haven’t noticed that happening recently.

The most famous no-show who won an Oscar was Marlon Brando whose substitute recipient was a Native American woman who made a speech about the cruel treatment of her people. I believe there has been some question regarding whether she was in fact Native American. Also, Jack Albertson won best supporting actor for the film The Subject Was Roses. I recall that Art Carney’s winning best actor award for Harry and Tonto was met by much surprise and even indignation that he beat the other four prestigious actors for his performance.

The most famous no-show who won an Oscar was Marlon Brando whose substitute recipient was a Native American woman who made a speech about the cruel treatment of her people. I believe there has been some question regarding whether she was in fact Native American. Also, Jack Albertson won best supporting actor for the film The Subject Was Roses. I recall that Art Carney’s winning best actor award for Harry and Tonto was met by much surprise and even indignation that he beat the other four prestigious actors for his performance.

Sacheen Littlefeather is indeed Indian. Her mother is Caucasian and she was raised by her mother and her mothers family but her father is 100% Indian. I don’t remember but I believe he is Apache. She does a lot of work in health care for Indian nations and she worked at one point with Mother Teresa, I think it was with AIDS patients. She’s very active in Indian movements. Not sure if she still does or not but she danced at many pow wows and was quite famous. Some people say she’s not Indian because she’s half white. I’m 1/4 white and have been told the same. But 1/32 is what is required to register in most if not all tribes. My dad is full my mom is half but different tribes on both sides. I could pick whichever tribe I want, and my kids have that option as well. And their father is 100% Mexican Indian and speaks their language with his family.

I wasn’t born yet when she declined the award for Marlon Brando but my parents talked about it quite a bit. One of the only Oscar info I know about.

Yeah it’s weird. Not sure if they knew he would decline ahead of time or if they thought it would be an acceptance speech. I wasn’t born in 1973 so it’s just something I’ve been told about. Don’t even know what her speech said or anything. I’m curious now. I might look for it later on and see if I can find it when my kids go to bed tonight.

They probably didn’t know ahead of time, since the winner is known only when he envelope is opened.

On the Oscar site I posted, there is footage of it. The announcer says accepting for Marlon Brando is… She gets to the stage and says Marlon cannot accept. She actually got some boos, that were then suppressed by applause. . She seemed very nervous.

It doesn’t seem that anyone knew he was declining until she actually got on stage and began speaking.

Roger Moore and Liv Ulman were the presenters. They seemed surprised.

I did read the review of Harry and Tonto by Roger Ebert. He gave the film a good review and thinks his performance is Oscar worthy.

It’s available on Netflix. I am hoping to see it

Is that the one in which Jason Robards play Howard Hughes, who befriends Art Carney’s character (who doesn’t seem to realize who Hughes is, given that he looks like a ragged bum)? Or am I thinking of a different movie?

I’m not sure. I’ve only recently heard about it. The description is that art carney plays a widower who is evicted from his NY apartment with his pet cat. I actually don’t know if Jason Robards is in it.
