Some believe the institution of the Eucharist could not have been on Thursday due to all the events of trials etc. Perhaps it could have been four days before the crucifixion by reference below:

“Tell the whole community of Israel: On the tenth of this month every one of your families must procure for itself a lamb, one apiece for each household… You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and then, with the whole assembly of Israel present, it shall be slaughtered” – Exodus 12:3, 6

Procuring the lamb on the 10th day - Institution of the Eucharist on Tuesday. Slaughtering the lamb on the 14th day – Crucifixion of Jesus on Friday.

What do you guys think?

God bless,

God bless,
Scripture says it was on Thursday because the PASSOVER SABBATH is always on Thursday.

However, the WEEKLY SABBATH is always on Saturday.

Therefore the confusion. Jesus celebrated the Passover Sabbath on Thursday, establishing the Mass on Holy Thursday. He was Crucified on Friday before the weekly Sabbath, that is why they were in a hurry to get Him off the Cross and buried, or they would violate the injunction against working on the WEEKLY Sabbath.

That’s interesting…How do you know the Passover Sabbath is always on a Thursday?

God bless,

Well, the problem with that is, is that the Gospel accounts do seem to imply that Jesus was tried and executed on the next morning after the evening He held His final meal with the disciples. For instance, in the Gospel of Mark:

And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” (14:12)

And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” (14:17-18)

And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” (14:22)

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” (14:26-28)

And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” (14:32)

And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. (14:41-43)

And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. (14:53-54)

And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. (15:1)

It seems very plausible that the 10th day of Passover month was Palm Sunday. The Passover lamb was to be examined for any defects during these 4 days. Jesus was examined by the chief priests and scribes from Palm Sunday through his arrest that led to his false conviction and crucifixion.

Sorry about that. My mistake. The question is far more technical than I at first thought, but I follow the Catholic Tradition.

Sincerely,

De Maria

Josephus doesn’t write about a “Passover Sabbath”. He does write about the Paschal meal, which precedes the first day of the Passover.

Since the Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar, the 14th day of the month of Nisan, or Abib can fall on any day of the week. The 14th day or evening of the Passover month is considered to be Pesach.

The morning after the Sabbath in Passover week is called the ‘waving of the sheaf of firstfruits’. This is when the High Priest would wave a sheaf of firstfruits, (usually the spring barley) in the holy place. This law goes back to Moses. Jesus Christ is called the firstfruits from the dead by the Apostle Paul because he was raised from the dead in the morning after the Sabbath in Passover week.

I’ve read the book of Exodus it doesn’t mention anything about examining the Passover lamb for defects but only to keep the lamb until the fourteenth day.

Where did you get your source from that says the lambs are examined during the four days?

God bless,

I apologize, but my memory is failing me. This is a Jewish source:
Regarding 12:6 it says ‘you shall keep it for inspection’, but this source says that this only applied to the first Passover.

Thanks very much for this source!

God bless,
You’re welcome. The Hebrew word (mishmareth) in this verse is not common. It is translated as guard, observe, watch…which indeed happened to our Passover Lamb during these four days.

God bless you too.
