The Pope and Praying in Latin

I heard that our Holy Father would like all Catholics to at least know how to say the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be in Latin.

Can anyone reference me to the source? I can’t remember where I heard it, I think on the radio.

I hadn’t heard that but I wouldn’t mind learning them in Latin. I have them in Latin in The handbook of Prayers but I don’t know how to pronounce all the words.
Anyone know if there is a free online audio website that has these prayers in Latin that we could listen to?

Okay, after having listened to the audio on the above site, I’m going to say that it’s probably not the best pronunciation. He makes the vowels far too American English. In fact, it’s pretty atrocious. I know I found a good site with audio back when I was first looking into Catholicism. I’ll try and find it for you again.

About the pronunciation guide site, it neglects to tell you to flip your r’s (like half-heartedly rolling the r). Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re supposed to do that in liturgical Latin, right? (I studied only classical Latin years ago in high school, but I’ve sung liturgical Latin in choirs many, many times.)

Pater Noster, Qui es in Caelis, Sanctificetur Nomen tuum, adveniat regnum tuum, fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem Nostrum Quotidianum Da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimmitimus debitoribus nostris, et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

Hail Mary

Glory be

I would strongly suggest attending a tridentine (latin) mass to hear the correct pronounciations.

Unfortunately here in the Philippines there are only a few TLM’s and the closest would mean a round trip of at least 4 hours and as I don’t drive here that’s not practical for me. My local parish church is round trip of only 10 minutes. Maybe I can ask a local priest to help with some of the words.
 
The pronunciation of the letters in ecclesiastical Latin is virtually the same as their pronunciation in Italian. Maybe that will help.
 
You can go to eBay and purchase a CD with Pope John Paul II praying the rosary in Latin. That is how I learned all of the prayers in Latin. Repetition is the key…

I think it was connected with the release of the compendium of the Cathechism of the Catholic Church?

and for those of you who are not quite fluent in Italian, it just simply sounds as Latin…🙂
 
I just recently learned them in English (and I still stumble over the “Our Father” if I’m not really concentrating) and now I have to learn them in Latin? :eek:

Maybe that will be a resolution for the next few months. 🙂

My husband is learning Latin 🙂 He got himself a book from the library, and is learning it 🙂 There are the prayers in Latin on the
web 🙂 I also went to my first ever Latin Mass in November with
my sister and her daughter, and myself and my husband. Yes, its
an approved Latin Mass, and I can tell you, I wish I knew Latin!
 
I don’t know the Latin language, but I plan to learn it during my seminary formation (I hope) in the future, and I already pray the Rosary in Latin.

It’s hard though, because certain sounds are the same and when I write them out, I’m never sure if they care ‘ae’ ‘e’ or ‘oe’ :P. I hope to learn how to chant the basic prayers, and then do plainchant rosary style in the future 😃

I bet you could get an old missal on eBay or somewhere like that. I have four, left over from the old days, and they have the Latin Mass with English translation right next to it. I love the Latin Mass because of the universality of it. It is the same no matter where you attend Mass.
